Things to Do In Greenville, South Carolina

If you are planning your first RV road trip it can be overwhelming. There are so many good places to travel to in the United States, but you have a limited amount of time every trip to go to the places you want to go. With that in mind, we think you should consider heading to Greenville, South Carolina. There are plenty of things to do whether you are an outdoor enthusiast, a history buff, a foodie, or an art lover. So, here are some of the best things to do in the area once you arrive.

1. Visit Falls Park on the Reedy

This location is a favorite for locals and tourists. Located in the heart of downtown, the park has beautiful stonework, walking trails, waterfalls, picnic areas, and lush gardens. At the entrance of the park you will find a monument that honors a former community leader that was instrumental in the establishment of Falls Park. There are also two eateries for you to enjoy in the park.

This is a popular place for families to go for a picnic. It is also very popular among do owners as there is plenty of space for them to run around.

2. Head to the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail

Whether you have your own bike, or you need to rent one, you should consider riding a bike on this trail. The 20 mile stretch will have you see some beautiful locations. At mile marker 24 you will find a Bike Skills Flow Park for you to get your heart pumping. You can also travel to the Furman University campus to take a break for lunch.

Recent tourists have said that they love the paved trail as it is safe and easy to ride on for kids. There are also plenty of convenient stops along the route. So, if you do not want to go the entire way you can cut your ride a little short.

3. Visit the Greenville County Museum of Art

This museum is home to the world’s largest collection of watercolors by American artist Andrew Wyeth. It also has an extensive collection of works from artist Jasper Johns. The museum also features a southern collection that offers a visual depiction of the southern experience from the colonial period to the present day.

4. Go to Runway Park at GMU

The Greenville Downtown Airport has a unique aviation themed park for kids to enjoy. The playgrounds are plane themed, and while they are there, they can also learn about the history of aviation. There is also a jogging trail nearby, so you can get some exercise while your kids are at the playground.

5. Head to Bob Jones University Museum and Gallery

This museum houses one of the largest collections of old master paintings in the United States. It has works dating back as early as the 14th century, and all the way through the 19th century. Additionally, the museum is home to the Bowen Collection of Antiquities, which has artifacts from ancient Egyptian, Roman, and Hebrew cultures. There is also an audio guide that you can sign up for that is only $5 extra.

6. Get a Drink at the Dark Corner Distillery

If you need a break and want to relax, you should head to the Dark Corner Distillery. This area has been known as the Dark Corner for more than 175 years thanks to its association with moonshiners. The owners of this establishment pay homage to the traditions of the Celts who originally settled here by producing a small batch of moonshine that includes aged whiskey, gin, and absinthe. In the tasting room, you will find samples of six spirits, accompanied by the history of each product.

7. Visit the Children’s Museum of the Upstate

If you have kids with you, they will not enjoy things like the Dark Corner Distillery. As a result, you will need to mix it up with things they enjoy. There is no better place to bring them than the Children’s Museum of the Upstate. This museum is located on the Heritage Green cultural campus in downtown Greenville, and it has three floors of interactive exhibits for kids to enjoy.

In the exhibits your kids can build dams, float toy ducks, and play guitar. They can even build skyscrapers in the construction zone or host a news show in the WTCM broadcasting studio. If you have younger children, there is a Toddler Lily Pond for them to play in. There is also a cafeteria on site, so you do not need to worry about meals.

8. Go to Centre Stage

If you want to see a show, you can head to Centre Stage. Here will find a 285 seat theater that offers a subscription season of music, comedy, and drama. There are also independent film screenings, chamber music concerts, and special art exhibitions throughout the year. So, no matter your interests you should be able to find a show that is appealing to you.

9. Visit Paris Mountain State Park

If you are more interested in experiencing the great outdoors, you can visit Paris Mountain State Park. The park is located 5 miles north of Greenville and is a very popular place for touring families looking for outdoor recreation.

Originally the park was built by the Civilian Conservation Park, now it has expanded to include many other building to help visitors. The Park Center has historical exhibits for you to learn about the area, and there are also picnic shelters, and swimming areas on site. You can also go fishing in the 15 acre lake nearby.

10. Head to the Peace Center

Finally, you should head to the Peace Center if you want to see another show. The Peace Center has a 2100 seat concert venue, and a 400 seat theater. Depending on the time of year you arrive, you can see Broadway shows, comedy, dance, and several musical performances. Shows take place all throughout the year, so you should check to see what they have while you are visiting.

The 10 Best RV Campgrounds in Greenville, South Carolina

If we have sold you on the fact that should visit Greenville, you will probably be excited to get there as soon as possible.

However, there are still a few things you need to do before you can begin your trip. Most notably, you need to sort out your living situation. If you have your rental RV, you need to figure out where you are going to park it. Here we will take a look at some of the best RV campgrounds in the area.

1. Paris Mountain State Park

Paris Mountain State Park is only 4 miles north of the city and offers a unique perspective of the area’s most impressive mountain while providing you a convenient place to park your RV. The campsites at this park are paved, so it is easy to move your RV to your campsite.

There is also a playground on site as well as a ballpark, hiking trails, and biking areas. There are also four lakes nearby that you can use to go kayaking, canoeing, or swimming.  

2. Rainbow RV Park

If you have a self contained RV, Rainbow RV Park might be the best for you. It is right outside of Greenville, and it is only a short distance from many of the city’s shops and restaurants. Sections of the campground are for seniors that live there full time, but there are many sections that are available for daily and weekly campers.

While staying at this RV park you will get full hook ups and a roomy site that is large enough for big rigs. The park has been open since 1947 and has grown since then. You will also need to make reservations beforehand because of the high demand.

3. Springwood RV Park

If you are coming into town on Interstate 85, Springwood RV Park might be the best campground for you. However, that is only the case if you are not travelling with kids because it is an adults only campground. There is a dog park on site, and several spaces for RVs to park.

4. GSP RV Park

GSP stands for Greenville Spartanburg, and the RV park represents the location between the two cities. From the park you can get to Greenville in 20 minutes by taking Route 29. It is also one of the newest parks in the area, so it is still in optimal condition.

In the park, you will find a well kept fenced dog park. It is large enough that it will give your dog plenty of space to run around and play with the other dogs. There is also a community fire pit that has been installed. Unfortunately, the park does not have a bathhouse or laundry room because of country restrictions.

5. Scuffletown RV Park

Scuffletown RV Park is located near Greenville and it has a rural atmosphere. However, despite that it is not far from local businesses. It is owned and operated by a family that is very accommodating to its guests. It is a great place for self contained RVs, and for people that want peace and quiet.

Near the campground you will find a small fishing lake. There is also plenty of beautiful scenery nearby. So, if you want to relax at the campground more than you want to explore the area, this is a great option for you.

6. Ivy Acres Lodge & RV Park

Ivy Acres RV Park has a retirement community of people age 45 and older. As a result, it is welcome to seniors from all walks of life. It sits on 77 acres of fields and forest that are available for guests to explore. There is also a small fishing pond for you to use.

This RV park is heavy on community, so if you stay here you can expect to get to know your neighbors. Cookouts are hosted by people regularly, and people will even go out for picnics together.

7. Travelers Rest/ N Greenville KOA

The focal point of the Travelers Rest/ N Greenville KOA is a brook that flows through the entire park. Most the gravel pads in the campground are near the stream to provide you with a calming and relaxing effect. If you prefer to have a more luxurious area, you can ask for a deluxe patio. These deluxe areas include patio furniture and a grill.

This is also a great campground for you to enjoy on site activities. You can play games like Connect Four in the pavilion, or you use the giant checkerboard. There is also a basketball court on site for you to get some exercise and have some fun. Finally, there is a playground available for children to play on.

8. Table Rock State Park

In Table Rock State Park there is a size limit of 40 feet. However, this should not be an issue except for a select group of people. The campground is in a wooded area and has an entrance to the Foothills Trail that leads to the Oconee State Park.

This RV park is named for the mountain that overlooks it. The state park and campground are meant to serve as a reminder that you are in the Blue Ridge region. There are also two lakes in the campground that you can use to go fishing or enjoy other water related activities.

9. Brook n Wood Family Campground

The Brook n Wood Family Campground provides campers with a variety of campsites to chose from. The campground is filled with amenities that are not normally available at campgrounds like a swimming pool and hot tub. You can even enjoy wagon rides on site.

The showers and other facilities also have handicap accessibility. Additionally, you will be happy to hear that there are plenty of nature trails that wind through the park, so there is lots to explore. There is also a playground which should help keep your kids entertained while you are trying to relax.

This RV park receives a lot of praise form its guests as they say it gives you everything you could ever want. It is very well maintained, and the hosts provide a friendly environment for its guests. The staff are also very helpful and willing to provide assistance to guests if they need it.

10. Cunningham RV Park

The final campground we will be looking at is Cunningham RV Park. At one point this was a KOA facility, but now it is a privately owned park. The park provides propane refueling, and full service gravel sites. There is also a camp store on site.

At the park you will enjoy several amenities including a large playground for you kids. There is also an Olympic sized pool for your entire family to enjoy. If you want to see some of the best attractions in this area, the campground can access Interstates 26 and 85 with ease. So, you can get anywhere you want to be quickly and efficiently.
