The Giant Saguaro cactus has long been the universal symbol of the American West. But, these plants are only found in this small part of the United States. Located near Tucson, Saguaro National Park contains the most extensive forest of Saguaro Cactus, which by the way can live for 200 years and grow to an impressive height 50 feet tall.

5. Visit Sedona

Sedona is surrounded by stunning red rock mountains and buttes and has one of the most beautiful settings in all of Arizona. It’s about one and a half hours north of Phoenix, and it’s a popular day trip from the city, but Sedona is worth visiting for more than just a couple of hours. The drive into Sedona from the south, through the Village of Oak Creek, is gorgeous and offers many scenic pullouts for photographing the landscape.

6. Monument Valley

One of the most well recognized images of the Desert Southwest is the sandstone buttes that predominate Monument Valley. This area straddles the border between Arizona and Utah and includes rugged rock formations, rocky spires and buttes, and sand dunes. At the heart of the valley is the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, where you’ll find an impressive visitor center and a 17-mile self-drive route along a one-way gravel road through the park. You can also take a guided tour to explore the area more thoroughly. If you don’t have time to go into the park, you can appreciate some of the views from the highway.

7. Glen Canyon National Recreation Area

The Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is a beautiful area with a combination of deep blue water, orange desert landscape, and scenic stone walls. The Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is also home to Lake Powell, which is one of the largest man made lakes in the United States. This area is also known for both land and water-based recreational activities.

The town of Page is a good starting point for exploring the Glen Canyon National Recreation area. Another of the area’s coolest attractions is Antelope Canyon. The slot canyons offer narrow walkways through the narrow slots of rock with light shining through and illuminating the red walls.

8. Havasu Falls

The Havasupai Indian Reservation located near Supai is home to the 100-foot Havasu Falls. The pools of water at the bottom of the Falls have a bluish green tint. And the waterfall is forked, so it looks like there are two falls when the river flows heavily. In the canyon of Havasu Creek, which is a tributary of the Colorado River, approximately 450 Havasupai Indians live a sheltered life. Havasupai means people of the blue-green water. They live on their small farming activities, but now they are mainly dependent on the tourist trade. In this beautiful valley, there are several waterfalls with deep pools.

9. Bisbee

In southern Arizona, near the Mexico border, is one of Arizona’s best kept secrets. Bisbee is a former mining town that has become a unique little community located high in the mountains. After the mines in Bisbee closed, it became a ghost town, and eventually, squatters moved in. However, over the years, the town became a refuge for artists and hipsters. Today, Bisbee is a prosperous small town with an eclectic mix of residents, unique shops and restaurants, and many exciting things to see and do.

Many of the homes there used to belong to former miners. The homes surround the historic downtown area. Many of these old homes are only accessible by long sets of stairs that connect to the town below. Views from the streets and hillside homes above the town are incredible, looking out over mountains all the way to Mexico. In the hills above the town, there are several hiking trails with fantastic views.

10. Tombstone

Tombstone is an Old West town with a modern look to it. There are staged gunfights in the streets and characters walking through the city in old western costume to recreate the heyday of this old Arizona town. Every shop, restaurant, and attraction has a western theme design. You can also still see some of the town’s history in the historical sites, like the O.K. Corral and the Boothill Graveyard. Also, the Tombstone Courthouse State Historic Park still has the original courthouse, which is now a museum.
