When you are planning out an RV trip it can be difficult to narrow down where to go. The same is true when you are planning your vacation in and around Raleigh. Here we will look at a few of the best things to do while you are exploring Raleigh and the surrounding area.

1. Head Over to William B. Umstead State Park

If you are traveling in an RV there is a good chance that you enjoy nature and everything it has to offer. One of the best places in the area to see some nature is William B. Umstead State Park. It is a great place for hikers, bikers, and runners to enjoy some great views. There are trails that start at both ends of the park that will lead you on interesting, winding paths.

There are three major lakes in the park, with the largest being Big Lake. On the lakes, you can rent canoes, kayaks, and rowboats to head out on the water. Once you are out there you are free to go fishing. However, if you prefer to stay on dry land there are plenty of picnic tables for you to use for a family meal. If you want to stay a little longer, you can rent reserve a room at the historic Maple Hill Lodge.

2. Check Out Brookhaven Nature Park

Brookhaven Nature Park is another great place to visit if you are a fan of nature. The park has been open since 1973 and it covers 26 acres of land. There are plenty of great views to enjoy here, including amazing hiking trails for you to check out.

Notably, this is a place for bird watchers to visit. There are dozens of species of birds that fly through this park every day. However, if you are interested in other wildlife, there is plenty of that as well. Finally, there is a picnic area for guests to use that is available on a first come, first served basis.

3. Go to Annie Louise Wilkerson MD Nature Preserve

In 2006 the city of Raleigh received a gift of 157 acres of land along Falls Lake from the great Dr. Annie Louise Wilkerson. In her will, it was stipulated that the land would be used as a nature preserve park, and that is exactly what it has turned into.

Today anyone can go to visit the park and enjoy all the features it has to offer. There are many hiking trails, wildlife watching areas, native plant gardens, and comfort stations. There are even electric car charging stations if you need one. Loaner equipment such as binoculars and kites are also available to all guests.

4. Visit Clemmons Educational Forest

If you are interested in being immersed in nature while being educated, Clemmons Educational Forest is a place you should visit. It is just one of a few educational forests in the state of North Carolina, but it is one of the best.

It opened in 1976, and all of the walking trails have marked educational exhibits along with them. You can also get lessons from rangers on the wildlife or the forest itself. When you are finished learning about everything in the forest, you can head over to the picnic areas for a little bit of relaxation time. You should note that the forest is closed on Mondays, but it is open for the rest of the week.

5. Head Over to Pullen Park

If you do not want to travel outside the city to a state park or nature preserve but you still want to experience nature, you should head over to Pullen Park. Located to the west of Downtown Raleigh, the park is adjacent to the University campus.

The park opened in 1887, and it has done nothing but grow since then. It has an aquatic center, an amusement arcade, an outdoor theater, a café, and an arts center. There are also plenty of activities for you to enjoy in the park like tennis or basketball, making it a great place to get some exercise.

Alternatively, if you want to relax you can bring your family to one of the many picnic areas for a delicious family meal.

6. Go on a Treetop Adventure

If you want to get some exercise while immersing yourself in nature, you can go on a Treetop Adventure. The Go Ape Treetop Adventure Course is a great place to get out of your comfort zone. The course takes two to three hours to complete, and while you are working your way through obstacles, you will have an amazing view up in the trees.

In addition to the rope ladders, Tarzan swings, and other obstacles, you will get to glide down five exciting zip lines. On those zip lines, you will get a stunning view of the canopy while moving at incredibly fast speeds.

7. Check Out the JC Raulston Arboretum

If you are looking for a more relaxing place to take in nature, JC Raulston Arboretum is a great place to check out. Here you can head over to the Asian Valley or the Color Trails Garden to take in different types of plants. This park has the largest and most diverse collections of plants in the southeast corner of the United States. It is also one of the best teaching gardens in that region.

8. Visit Eno River State Park

Eno River State Park gets its name from the river that flows through it. The park is separated into five sections, each of which has interesting trails and wildlife for you to see and explore. Alternatively, you can take a ride down the river to see the park in its entirety.

Rolling View – Falls Lake State Recreation Area will provide you with everything you need to have a safe and comfortable camping experience.

The park has more than 300 campsites for you to check out that are split into four different sections. There are also five swim beaches for you to check out. There you can obviously go swimming, but you can also enjoy other water based activities.

The sites themselves are quite comfortable as they come with electric, water, and sewer hookups. There is a sanitary dump station in all four sections of the park, allowing you to get rid of your waste. Every site also comes with a picnic table, a fire pit, and a barbecue grill. Pets are also allowed at this park, so you can bring your furry friend with you. Finally, phone service is available to all guests.

2. William B Umstead Park

Another great place to stay is William B Umstead Park. There you will have access to a variety of pull thru campsites with a maximum length of 60 feet. Sites are reservable, but since the park is so popular, they fill up very quickly. As a result, you will want to call well in advance to make your reservation. This is also a wheelchair accessible park, so you should not have any issues there if that is something that affects you.

Most of the sites in the park come with full electric, water, and sewer hookups. Fire pits, picnic table, and barbecue grills are available to all guests at their campsites. You will also have access to a sanitary dump station to get rid of your trash. Finally, this is a pet friendly park, so you can bring your furry friends with you on your trip without issue.

3. Raven Rock State Park

Raven Rock State Park is a fantastic place to camp at while you are visiting Raleigh. The park has several excellent hiking trails nearby for you to check out, and there are rivers and lakes for you to go to if you want to enjoy some water based activities.

The sites themselves have full electric, water, and sewer hookups for all guests. They also all come with a picnic table, a fire pit, and a barbecue grill for you to use. These amenities should help you feel more comfortable during your stay. They will also allow you to have fun if you want to have a relaxing day on site. Additionally, there are shower and restroom facilities open to all guests at all times. Unfortunately, Wi-Fi is not available in the park, so you will be having a dry camping experience. 4. Crosswinds Campgrounds

Crosswinds Campgrounds has 182 campsites available to guests for RV and tent camping. 134 of these sites come with water and electric hookups. Every site also comes with a picnic table, a barbecue grill, and a lantern holder. This will allow you to stay up late if you want to do some outdoor reading late at night.

Shower facilities, restroom facilities, and trash containers are also available to all guests. Guests are asked to take all their trash to the dump station before their stay is finished. If you are staying for an extended period of time you should regularly visit the dump station to help prevent wildlife from being attracted to the campground.

Finally, this is a pet friendly campground. However, guests are asked to keep their pets on a leash most of the time so that they do not wander from site to site bothering other campers.

RVacation RV Park is another fantastic place for RVers to stay while they are visiting Raleigh and the surrounding area. Most of the sites at this park are pull thrus with 30 and 50 amp service.

All guests will have access to cable TV and Wi-Fi while they stay here. Cable TV is directly available at their campsite, whereas the Wi-Fi is accessible all throughout the campground. Additionally, this is a big rig friendly site, so you should not have any issues. Trees are trimmed to 18 feet so that they do not hit the roofs of any vehicles.

Furthermore, while you stay at RVacation RV park you will have access to a wide variety of amenities. Those amenities include a fishing pond, a convenience store, an RV wash station, laundry facilities, dump stations, and a pool. You should note that the fishing pond does not require a license, so all guests can use it.

6. North Carolina State Fairgrounds

The North Carolina State Fairgrounds is visited by over two million people every year. Two million people do not stay at the campgrounds, but the campgrounds are an excellent place to stay at.

There are 300 campsites available to guests, with 100 of them being recently renovated. RV rental prices are for 24 hour periods. As a result, most people do not stay here for extended periods of time. Instead, they stay here when they are passing through and need a comfortable place to stay.

The sites come with 50 amp electric, water, and sewer hookups. There is free Wi-Fi available to all guests all throughout the campground. There are also several dump stations available for guests to use. You will also be happy to hear that there is 24 hour security to ensure that no unwanted people wander onto the campground at night.

7. Poplar Point Campground

Poplar Point Campground is one of the largest RV campgrounds in the state of North Carolina. It has 579 TV and tent camping sites available, with 363 of them having electric and water hookups. Each site also comes with a picnic table, a grill, and a lantern holder.

Additionally, guests have access to shower facilities, restroom facilities, trash containers, and a dump station. There are also 50 large group RV campsites for you to use if you are traveling with other RVers.

8. Peachtree Cove RV Park

Peachtree Cove RV Park has everything you need to be comfortable while you are exploring Raleigh and the surrounding area. All sites come with 30 and 50 amp service, as well as water and electric hookups. There is also a dump station on site which all guests are encouraged to use to stop animals from being attracted to the campground.

While staying here you will have creek and river access. You can even rent kayaks and canoes and take a journey down the river. When you are at the campground you will have access to complimentary Wi-Fi, but cable TV is not currently available. 9. Spruce Pine Campground

That being said, it is an excellent campground during the summer. Guests will have access to excellent RV, tent, and group campsites. However, this campground provides a dry camping experience, so the sites do not have hookups. The campground does allow pets though, so you can bring your furry friend with you on your trip.

10. Spring Hill RV Park

The final RV park we recommend that you should consider is Spring Hill RV Park. The park has pull thru sites with big rig access. The sites also have large trees above them which provide shade to guests on hot days. Pets are allowed, so you can bring your furry friends with you on your RV trip. There is also on site trash pick up, as well as propane fill up service.
