Recipe for the Best Bug Repellent for Your RV Windshield
If you’re looking for a way to keep bugs from sticking to your RV windshield, try this homemade recipe that combines three products: Rain X Spray, Rain X Washer Fluid Additive, and Color Crush Special Detailer Spray.
Together, these products create a slick and shiny surface that repels water and bugs.
1. Wash your RV windshield with soap and water to remove dirt and grime. Let it dry completely.
2. Combine 1 oz of Rain X Spray, 5 oz of Rain X Washer Fluid Additive, and 1 oz of Color Crush Special Detailer Spray in a spray bottle.
3. Spread the bug repellent mixture onto your windshield with your hand. I wear one of my orange Glovewroks gloves to keep it off of my hands. These are the same gloves I use when hooking up our sewer hoses and they are awesome!
4. Wait one hour and buff the entire windshield with a microfiber cloth for a glossy finish and extra protection for your windshield.

You should apply bug repellent to the RV windshield at least once a month or every 1,000 miles of driving. However, you may need to use it more often if you drive in areas with high bug activity or harsh weather.

5 Tips to Clean Bugs Off Your RV Windshield
1. Use an Effective Cleaner
The best bug repellents for RV windshields are commercial bug removers designed for this purpose.
These products usually contain ingredients that break down the proteins and enzymes in bug guts, making them simple to wipe off.
Some of the best bug cleaners for RVs are:
I. Aero Cosmetics Wash Wax ALL
As you saw above, Aero Cosmetics Wash Wax ALL is a waterless wash and wax product you can use on any surface of your RV, including the windshield. It cleans and protects your RV from bugs, dirt, grime, and UV rays. It’s also biodegradable and eco-friendly.
II. Star Brite Bug Off
Star Brite’s Bug-Off is a spray-on bug remover that works on contact. It dissolves bug residue without harming your paint or clear coat. It’s also safe for glass, plastic, vinyl, and rubber surfaces. You may recognize the brand from their other RV products.
III. Turtle Wax Power Foam Bug & Tar Remover
Turtle Wax Power Foam Bug & Tar Remover is a foaming spray that clings to bug splatter and tar spots. It loosens and lifts them off your RV surface without scratching.
2. Avoid Cleaning on Hot Days or in Direct Sunlight
Another tip for cleaning bugs off your RV windshield is avoiding it on hot days or in direct sunlight. When it’s too hot or sunny, the cleaner evaporates too quickly, leaving streaks or spots.
3. Use a Product Made for Bug Scrubbing
Sometimes, bug splatter can be so stubborn you need a product specifically for bug scrubbing. These products are usually sponges or pads with a mesh or textured surface that can gently scrape off bug residue without scratching your RV surface.
Some of the best products for bug scrubbing are:
I. Carrand 9500 Professional Squeegee
The Carrand 9500 Professional Squeegee has a 20-inch handle extending up to 48 inches. It has a rubber blade on one side and a nylon mesh bug scrubber on the other. It’s ideal for cleaning hard-to-reach areas on your RV windshield.
II. VIKING Mesh Bug Cleaning Car Wash Sponge
The VIKING Mesh Bug Cleaning Car Wash Sponge has a mesh cover that removes bugs and tar from your RV surface. It’s soft and flexible enough to conform to curves and contours. It’s also easy to rinse and reuse.
4. Rinse with a Hose or Microfiber Towel
After using the above methods to clean bugs off your RV windshield, rinse any remaining cleaner or bug residue with water.
You can use a hose with a spray nozzle to rinse your entire RV front end or a microfiber towel dampened with water to wipe off your windshield.
However, be aware some RV parks won’t let you spray down your RV with a hose because of water conservation issues. In that case, you’ll have to use a towel or wait until you find a place to use a hose.
5. Try a Used Dryer Sheet for Stubborn Bugs
If you still have some stubborn bug guts stuck to your RV windshield, use a used dryer sheet to get it off.
First, wet the sheet with water and gently remove any leftover residue.
Be sure to rinse away any remaining cleaner or debris afterward.

Do you have any solutions for getting pine sap off my RV?
Here in the northwest, you can’t help but park under a pine / fir tree.
Use GREEN DAWN liquid dish washing soap . I us d to drive a truck, and owned three or them. Dawn is best cleaning soap I found and cheap. I ran in Florida a lot . I used it to keep the love bugs off the windshield and the front of the truck try it..
Like the article and especially the vinegar and lemon cleaners. I do take issue with the rainex. I used to love the stuff while driving in light rain, but once you have to turn the wipers on, it smears a fog in the swept area especially if you are driving in fog! It can make it hard to see, especially at night with headlights coming at you!
Where I live, in Central Florida, twice a year the “Love Bugs” swarm and when they hit the windshield they can make it messy in a hurry. They are also very hard to get off with the wipers and sometimes it just makes it worse unless you can stand in front of the RV and squirt the windshield while the wipers are on. I have never tried the vinegar solution on them, but it sounds like it might work!
