What Is a Class C Motorhome?

What Is a Class C Motorhome

A Class C Motorhome is a driveable RV built with a cab or cut-away chassis. Essentially a camper attached to a van or truck body, this motorhome design feels very familiar to driving an everyday vehicle.

The design also means that Class C motorhomes often have a permanent bunk or additional storage above the cab. Because of these features and design, Class C Motorhomes are preferable in several ways to their older brother, the Class A Motorhome.

The idea for Class C Motorhomes was pioneered by Toyota in the early 1970s. Motivated by disappointing sales of their Hilux truck and high gas prices following the Oil Embargo of 1973, Toyota invented the Hilux Class C Motorhome

Toyota partnered with already established RV companies like Winnebago and Chinook to permanently attach a truck camper to their Hilux pickup truck. The results were some of the first-ever Class C Motorhomes.

These micro mini motorhomes, as Toyota called them, were easier to maneuver and more fuel-efficient than the Class A Motorhomes that previously dominated the market. The Class C Motorhome and its subsequent loyal fan base were born.

Class C RV Towing Capacity

Class C Motorhome Tow

Class C Motorhomes are driveable RVs. As such, once camp is established, you will not have the convenience of a separate vehicle for quick excursions. This is why many Class C Motorhome owners will tow a car or small truck. Some even choose to tow a boat or other recreational vehicle.

While it is common to tow, Class C Motorhomes can differ greatly in their towing capacity. Additionally, the type of vehicle you plan to tow will determine whether you can flat tow or if you will need a separate trailer.

Before you tow with your Class C Motorhome be sure to check the GVWR, GCWR, and the max hitch weight of your RV.

To tow safely, you cannot exceed any of these three things. Most smaller Class C Motorhomes will be able to tow an average-sized car. Some larger Class Cs will be able to tow a truck or even larger loads.

Class C Motorhome Fuel-Efficiency

Class C Motorhome Fuel Efficiency

When it comes to fuel efficiency, Class C Motorhomes fall in the middle of the drivable campers. More efficient than Class A’s and less efficient than Class B’s, the average gas mileage for a Class C RV is 8-10 miles per gallon.

Many factors can determine the realized fuel efficiency of your Class C Motorhome. Speed, weight, road grade, wind, and ethanol content of the fuel you use can all impact fuel efficiency.

All of the Class C Motorhomes we reviewed are diesel. So these motorhomes will inherently get about 10% better mileage than a gas engine. This equates to a whopping 1-2 more miles per gallon.

You may be wondering what else you can do to improve the fuel efficiency of your Class C Diesel Motorhome. By taking your RV for regular maintenance checks you will avoid the decreases in fuel efficiency that comes from things like a dirty air filter.

Properly inflated tires and running your air conditioner less can both help optimize your fuel efficiency. Finally, altering your driving habits to reduce the need to accelerate and brake can also improve fuel mileage drastically.

Do Class C Motorhomes Use DEF?

Do Motorhomes Use DEF

Yes, Class C Diesel Motorhomes do use DEF. In fact, as of 2010, the EPA mandated DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) for all diesel vehicles. Their goal was to reduce NOx and particulate emissions. Since these types of emissions are linked to cardiovascular disease and death it is not hard to see why DEF usage is important.

Many RV owners have the misconception that they need to fill their DEF tank each time they fill their fuel tank. This is not the case. Although it depends on the weight of the vehicle as well as several other factors, on average 2.5 gallons of DEF are used per 800 miles traveled.  Another good rule of thumb is to fill your DEF tank about as frequently as you get an oil change.

The cost of DEF averages between $6 and $10 per gallon. That means for every 1,000 miles traveled you will only spend about $25 on DEF. A small price to pay for fewer harmful emissions and better air quality.

How Much Does a Class C RV Cost?

Class C Motorhome Cost

Class C Diesel motorhomes range in sticker price quite a bit. The price can vary even more if you buy gently used. But whether shopping for new or used, do not forget to budget for the total cost of purchasing and owning a motorhome.

There are other cost considerations beyond simply the purchase price. You will want to consider sales and property tax, finance interest rate, insurance, storage costs, maintenance, dealer prep fees, tag, title, and registration fees as well as any dealer add-ons.

Once you make an investment, routine maintenance including oil changes, tire rotation and the like need to be factored into your budget. Additionally, the cost of diesel fuel and DEF can add up. Make sure you consider and plan for maintenance as you would any other vehicle you own.
