Nothing beats the open road. RV enthusiasts will know this feeling better than anyone. The scenery, the fresh air, the escape from the daily grind; all these things make RV-ing a joy. But what about when you park up and settle down for a cozy night? Can you be sure that you have the best RV mattress?
Unfortunately, most RVs come standard with funky mattresses that are extremely uncomfortable. Talk about an unhappy camper! A bad night’s sleep is enough to make a grump out of the most positive of us.
Luckily, you’re not stuck with the horrible mattress that comes stock in many RVs – nor the old mattress that comes with your used rig. In our opinion, a new RV mattress should be your first upgrade!
Choosing the best RV mattress is vital if you want to wake in the morning feeling refreshed and ready for the day’s activities. It can be the difference between a great vacation and a miserable one.
With this in mind, we researched the market to find the best RV mattresses out there. Read on for the top-rated picks!

The Journey Series is more budget friendly but it’s still a great mattress.

All three of these mattress series are fully customizable so if you have a corner cut mattress they will build the mattress to your exact specifications.
2. Zinus Ultima Comfort Mattress
- Material – Memory Foam
- Size – Short Queen 74″ x 60″ x 10″
- Weight – 59.4 lbs
This Zinus Ultima Comfort Mattress is constructed of memory foam, so it conforms to your body shape well. The mattress comprises of three layers of foam; 3″ of memory foam, 2″ of pressure-relieving comfort foam, and 5″ of high-density base support foam.
Look out for the US certified certiPUR label as a mark of quality. Only the best memory foam wins this accolade. Zinus has removed most of the petroleum-based foam and replaced it with bio-foam, constructed using a plant-based oil. It means it is better for the planet, and it keeps your mattress fresh. Also, it has ActivCharcoal to reduce odors and absorb moisture. This model is a 10-inch, but it also comes in an 8-inch variety, so if you have a smaller RV, it should still fit.
As with all foam mattresses, this Zinus comes as a compact package and needs 48 hours to allow the mattress to relax to reach it’s full shape and comfort level. This is also an excellent choice of mattress if you have one eye on the budget because it is competitively priced.

3. Dynasty Gel Cool Breeze Mattress
- Material – Cool Gel Memory Foam
- Size – RV Queen 75″ x 60″ x 10″
- Weight – 55 lbs
This Dynasty Gel Cool Breeze Mattress comes in many size options, from twin and twin XL to California King, so if you have space, they have the mattress to match. This is a gel cool memory foam mattress, which means that no matter how warm it is, it will keep you cool. This mattress comes in four layers: 2.5″ high-density memory foam, 2″ cool airflow plus a 2″ cool airflow foam support, and 3.5″ base support. It all adds up to a relaxing sleep experience that is second to none. The comfort level is medium-firm, so if you like a harder mattress to sleep on, this could be the one.

4. Live and Sleep Resort Classic
- Material – Air-Infused Memory Foam
- Size – Short Queen 75″ x 60″ x 10″
- Weight – 60.8 lbs
This Live and Sleep Resort Classic is a medium-firm memory foam mattress. Just like the Dynasty, they make this mattress in all sizes, so no matter how large your RV bed is, they have one to match. Unlike the dynasty, with four layers of foam, this Live and Sleep mattress has just two. The top layer is 2.5″ of air-infused memory foam, while the extra thick base layer of foam provides support and firmness.
The cooling airflow system allows body heat to dissipate through the open cells of the foam. Live and Sleep call it “self-ventilating.” All we know is that memory foam is excellent for regulating body heat, so this mattress should keep you feeling fresh at night. If you couple that with the knitted cover, which helps to circulate air around your mattress, then you have a recipe for a comfortable night’s sleep.
The Amazon reviews for this mattress are impressive, with the buying public giving it a healthy rating. It means that it has lived up to expectations, with many happy customers. It is also reasonably priced, so you get a lot of mattress for your money.

5. Lucid Gel Memory Foam Mattress
- Material – Cool Gel Memory Foam
- Size – Short Queen 75″ x 60″ x 10″
- Weight – 52 lbs
This Lucid Gel Memory Foam Mattress has two layers, much like the Live and Sleep model. The top layer comprises of 2.5″ ventilated and gel-infused memory foam, with the 7.5″ base layer being high-density foam for extra support. It is certiPUR certified, so you can guarantee it contains the finest quality foam.
The cover is made from a TENCEL blend fabric, meaning that it helps to control moisture levels and allows air to flow through the mattress. This mattress does not contain synthetic or natural latex of any kind and is CFC-free, mercury-free, and guaranteed not to include any ozone-depleters. So, you can sleep safely in the knowledge that this mattress is kind to the planet.
This mattress has sold in the thousands on Amazon and is a very popular choice. That may be down to the quality of the mattress or the affordable purchase price – or both. Whichever it is, this is an excellent choice if you want a mattress that doesn’t keep you awake at night worrying about the cost.

6. Travel Happy RV Mattress
- Material – Gel Cool Memory Foam
- Size – Short Queen 75″ x 60″ x 8″
- Weight – 47 lbs
This Travel Happy RV Mattress is only 8″ deep, so it is lighter than the others featured. It is a medium-firm mattress, constructed from graphite-infused gel memory foam. The graphite helps to regulate your body heat and absorbs moisture and odors to keep the mattress and you smelling fresh in the morning.
The 1″ top layer of memory foam sits on top of a 7″ high-density base layer for support. The whole mattress is encased in an eight-way stretch fabric that protects the foam and helps to deliver a comfortable sleep.
The only downside is the smell these foam mattresses give off when they are unboxed. It might be an idea to open some windows on your RV to get rid of the odor.
This mattress is 100% American made, so you can buy this safe in the knowledge you are supporting a US company. This mattress is slightly more expensive than some featured in this review, but overall, it is still excellent value for money.

7. Zinus Deluxe Spring Mattress
- Material – Sprung Mattress
- Size – Short Queen 74″ x 60″ x 10″
- Weight – 76.6 lbs
This Zinus Deluxe Spring Mattress is the first sprung variety to feature in the review. It seems that the majority of RV mattresses are memory foam these days. It doesn’t mean that this sprung mattress is a dinosaur from some long-forgotten age; this mattress is possibly the most advanced on the list.
It comprises of five layers, starting with the 7.5″ iCoil pocketed springs. Sitting above the springs is a 0.5″ high-density layer, and above that are two layers of comfort foam. Topping it all of is the microfiber quilted fabric and the knitted Jacquard cover.
The beauty of a sprung mattress is that the coils eliminate any movement transfer, meaning that if you are a restless sleeper, you won’t disturb your partner in the night. This mattress is a lot heavier than similar memory foam varieties, weighing in at a massive 76.6 lbs, but once it is situ, you shouldn’t have any cause to move it.
This sprung mattress is attractively priced and competes with the memory foam varieties for value for money.
- Firm, customized support from layers of Pressure Relieving Comfort Foam and iCoil Pocketed Springs
- iCoil system is comprised of hundreds of independent iCoils to virtually eliminate any motion transfer
- Only the Highest Quality of Foam - Foam is CertiPUR-US Certified for durability, performance, and content
- Smartly Shipped - Our patented technology allows our mattresses to be efficiently compressed, rolled and shipped in a box conveniently to your door
- Worry free 10 year limited warranty

Why Should You Choose a Specialized “RV Mattress”?
RVs are designed to be compact and as lightweight as possible. So for that reason, manufacturers choose the fittings and fixtures based on weight rather than comfort. RV beds are generally smaller than standard beds you find at home, which is why you hear terms like “short queen” and “RV queen” or “RV king” when talking about RV mattresses.
A residential queen sized mattress is about 6 inches longer than an RV queen sized mattress… so a residential queen will be too big for an RV queen bed platform.
Some RVs have odd-shaped bed frames or curved edges, meaning that standard mattresses won’t fit. Often, to get an RV mattress that fits, you will have to order a bespoke mattress. Buying a made-to-order model is not the cheapest option and could set you back many hundreds of dollars.
If your RV has a standard size bed, well done, you’ve made your life a lot easier when it comes to selecting the best RV mattress. In fact, you could save a lot of money by choosing a standard mattress.
Factors to Consider When Shopping For an RV Mattress
So, you’re planning your next RV vacation, and you remember the nightmare you had last time with your mattress. It’s time to shop for a new one, but how do you choose wisely? Here are some considerations you should keep in mind when shopping for a replacement RV mattress.
RV Mattress Sizing
Before committing to purchase, make sure that you measure the space correctly. RV mattresses are not all a standard size. Here are some common RV mattress sizes to help you decide which one is right for you:
- Short Queen 60″ x 75″ (Most popular size)
- RV Queen 60″ x 80″ (Most popular size)
- Olympic Queen 66″ x 80″
- Three Quarter 48″ x 75″
- RV Full Mattress 53″ x 75″
- RV King 72″ x 80″
- Eastern King 76″ x 80″
- California King 72″ x 84″
- RV Bunk 42″ x 80″
There are other sizes available, but the list is almost endless, so we decided to focus on the most common choices. Make sure you measure twice, so you only have to fit once. And make sure you measure from the inside lip of the RV bed because using the old mattress as a template may mean you get incorrect measurements. Over time, mattresses shrink and warp.
Once you have established the correct size of your RV Mattress, you can then start to look at the type of mattress you want.
RV Mattress Material Types
The best RV Mattresses come in many varieties; sprung, memory foam, and gel cool, to name a few. But which do you choose?
Inner Spring
This type of RV mattress is more traditional than some of the memory foam varieties on the market. It consists of a series of internal springs, interlocked across the width and length of the mattress. It is designed to spread the weight of your body across the springs evenly.
The downside is that this type of mattress can suffer from broken springs over time, as wear and tear take effect. It can make for a very uncomfortable night’s sleep. And talking of comfort, they struggle to compete with memory foam mattresses. Also, sprung mattresses can be quite noisy to lay on as the springs creak and groan with age.
Pros of an Inner Spring RV Mattress
- They are the same as the mattress you use at home, which means you will be sleeping on a familiar bed. There is nothing worse than sleeping on a different bed and not getting comfortable.
- They last for years if they are well treated.
- Typically, they can be flipped over to keep the springs fresh. Many foam mattresses are one-sided and not suitable to be flipped over.
- They offer a higher level of comfort than a foam mattress as they are thicker and have a much higher bounce factor.
The Cons of an Inner Spring RV Mattress
- The springs fail over time, making the sleep experience less comfortable. There is nothing worse than a sagging mattress for bad posture and discomfort.
- The sewn-in top padding often wears thin and becomes lumpy. When this happens, you really feel the springs in the mattress.
- Most RVs have a solid plywood bed base, so a sprung mattress will collect condensation unless it is well ventilated.
- Sprung mattresses can be cumbersome.
- They are difficult to store in the winter months, or when you decide that your RV season has ended.
Memory Foam Mattresses
If you suffer from back pain and other posture-related problems, owning a memory foam mattress can be a lifesaver. Memory foam molds around the shape of your body, offering a level of comfort and support that you simply don’t get from a sprung mattress.
Plus, memory foam is excellent at regulating your body temperature, meaning you get a good night’s sleep without the need to kick off the covers. If you do generate a lot of body heat during the night, consider investing in a gel cool memory foam mattress to keep you fresh.
The Pros of a Memory Foam RV Mattress
- Newer memory foam mattresses regulate body temperature better than other types of mattresses. They are breathable and often have gel cooled foam to keep you fresh in the height of summer.
- They mold to your body shape and give you a better sleep.
- They are extremely useful if you suffer from posture problems or a bad back. Memory foam adds a layer of support that a sprung mattress doesn’t give.
- They are lighter and easier to maneuver.
- They are easier to store away in the off-season because they can be rolled up.
The Cons of a Memory Foam RV Mattress
- Some of the leading memory foam mattresses can cost hundreds and even thousands of dollars.
- Memory foam mattresses can feel uncomfortable initially when you get into bed, as the heat from your body softens the foam over time.
- Some people don’t like the way the foam feels against their bodies. It can feel cool to the touch or often quite clammy.
- They are vacuum-sealed when they first arrive and take over 48 hours to relax to their correct shape fully.
Foam Mattresses
Typically constructed of polyurethane or latex, these mattresses are often cheaper to buy and less comfortable as they lack the support that memory foam or sprung mattresses have. A foam mattress is a good choice for one or two nights, but don’t try spending a fortnight out in your RV because you will suffer.
The Pros of a Foam RV Mattress
- These types of mattresses are often the cheapest to buy, so if you are shopping on a budget, this is ideal for you.
- They are easy to cut to the correct shape of your RV bed, especially if you buy the cheapest foam mattresses.
- They are lightweight and easy to store in the off-season because they can be rolled up.
- Foam mattresses are perfect for recreational RV use. If you live on your rig, then a foam mattress won’t be the best choice.
The Cons of a Foam RV Mattress
- Lose their bounce quickly, especially if you buy a cheaper make.
- Foam mattresses are poor at regulating body heat, meaning that in the summer months, you are going to get hot and clammy.
- The mattress foam needs to be durable, and the higher the density of the foam, the firmer the mattress is. Also, the high-density foam doesn’t breathe very well, leaving you feeling sweaty during the night.
- Typically, foam mattresses are the mattress of choice for most RV manufacturers because they are the most basic.
Trust the Reviews
When you decide on which is the best RV mattress for you, before you commit your hard-earned cash, check out the reviews. We live in a world where everything has a review, and RV mattresses are no exception. Amazon is a great place to start. If the customers give it a big thumbs down, it may be time to think again.
Also, check out RV enthusiast groups on social media. There are hundreds, possibly thousands of pro-camping and RV groups, and everyone has an opinion on something, including the mattress you are thinking of purchasing. Ask the question and wait for the response. The camping and RV community are helpful and accommodating, and only too happy to steer you in the right direction.
Adding Comfort to Your RV Mattress
If you are shopping on a budget, or you want to maximize the comfort value of your RV mattress, you can buy products to make your life easier. Remember, you can’t put a price on a good night’s sleep.
Foam Pads – In your home, it is likely that your mattress sits on a slatted or sprung base, so it increases the comfort value of your overall sleep experience, but this isn’t the case in an RV. Most RV beds have solid plywood bases, meaning they are unforgiving, to say the least. Adding additional foam layers below the RV mattress will soften the impact of that solid wood base and increase your comfort. Many RV and camping stores stock these foam pads, but they can be expensive. If you want to save some dollars, try your local DIY or upholstery store where you can purchase foam, similar to the material used in your couch cushions.
Mattress Toppers – One way of increasing the comfort value of your mattress is to add a RV mattress topper. These toppers can even transform sprung mattresses! They add a layer of luxury that elevates an ordinary RV mattress, making them so comfortable that you would think it was a premium product.
Mattress toppers slide over the top of your existing mattress, meaning they are easy to fit. They are expensive, in some cases costing as much a mattress, but the added layer of luxury is worth it. We get that not all toppers are going to fit the multitude of size options available for the RV mattress market, but you can alter the sizes easily enough.
Final Thoughts
Ultimately, the Tochta Mattress is the Best RV Mattress in our experience. Tochta Mattress is a US company with outstanding customer service, very high quality fully customizable mattresses in all shapes and sizes, and the best warranty in the industry.
In case you were wondering, we didn’t forget to include air mattresses and foam mattresses in this article. We just didn’t consider them to be up to the same standard when compared to memory foam and sprung varieties, and therefore not the best RV mattresses to recommend.
Whether you prefer the qualities of a memory foam mattress or the added bounce of a sprung mattress, one thing is certain; sleeping on a mattress that leaves you stiff and sore in the morning is going to ruin your RV holiday. A good mattress is an investment, especially when you consider that almost a third of your time will be spent sleeping. Think of it like this; you wouldn’t sit all day in an uncomfortable chair, so why needlessly suffer when you are asleep.
I have a class c RV in which the bed is on the slide. The bottom third of the short queen mattress folds up when the slide is in. Can you make a reccomendation for a replacement for that mattress?
We hunted until we found an RV with king size bed. We moved our select comfort king mattress from home into our 2020 36’ Bay Star. We are so happy it worked out for us.
We bought a used Class A with a short queen. My husband is tall & needed a full queen. With the slide out extended there was room for a full queen but retracted, a full did not fit. We found if the end of the bed was raised, there was room for the full queen, so on travel days, we lift the end of the bed & lock it up at an angle with supports. When we park & extend the slide out, we can drop the mattress flat storing the supports under the bed. We replaced the short queen with a 10” memory foam full queen, perfect!
