In the museum, you will find everything on display from missiles and rockets to other space memorabilia. 

Additionally, it has an IMAX Space Dome Theater which gives showings of on screen space themed entertainment. You can also come here multiple times and see something new as there is a mixture of permanent and traveling exhibits. 

2. Head to the Huntsville Botanical Garden

The Huntsville Botanical Garden is a 112 acre lush green oasis near the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. Access to this garden is free and it is open during all four seasons. Some of the most popular attractions within the gardens include the butterfly house and the nature center.

Before the Weeden House Museum and Garden was a museum, it was the home of Dr. William Weeden. It also once served as the home of former US Supreme Court Justice John McKinley. There are also several federal officers that stayed here during the Civil War. 

Today you can take a day trip of the famous home and learn all about life during the 19th century. Specifically, you will learn about Maria Howard Weeden and her family. You can take a stroll through the gardens to see the beautifully maintained plantlife. There are also tours available and activities for children to enjoy throughout the day. 

5. Go to Monte Sano State Park 

Monte Sano State Park is nestled atop Monte Sano Mountain near Huntsville. It is a great spot to spend a day with your family and get an amazing view of North Alabama’s mountains. This is also a great spot for camping as there are 89 campsites and 14 cabins available. 

Furthermore, the Civilian Conservation Corps museum showcases the park’s history and provides a place for guests to relax. A highlight of the museum is the Von Braun Astronomical Society’s planetarium and observatory. It hosts special events and stargazing on certain days to guests. 

6. Go on a Harmony Park Safari

Alabama is a long way from Africa, but that does not mean you cannot go on an African Safari. The Harmony Park Safari is a two mile self navigated trip through a nature preserve. The preserve is home to several exotic and endangered animals.

You will see things like zebras, lions, and tigers while you tour around the reserve. However, while you are on the safari you need to make sure that you follow the rules. That means you need to keep your hands and feet inside the car at all times, and you cannot crack the window more than eight inches. 

7. Check Out Big Spring International Park

Big Spring International Park is one of the most beautiful areas in Huntsville. It surrounds a lagoon which was the original water source that led John Hunt to start building the city of Huntsville here in 1805.

The park consists of 12.5 acres of beautiful outdoor space. This includes a fountain and a canal that connects it to the grounds of the Von Braun Center. Visitors can also pick up souvenirs and interesting gifts from other countries from the general store.

10. Go to the Huntsville Museum of Art

The Huntsville Museum of Art is home to a collection of 19th and 20th century art. When you visit you will find works from Africa, Asia, and Europe on display. However, the main attraction remains the American art. Artists like John Sloan, Frank Stella, and Andy Warhol have art on display here.

1. Monte Sano State Park

Monte Sano State Park features 89 improved campsites, a primitive campground, and a camp store. While staying here you will have an amazing view of the nearby mountains, while staying at a beautiful campground yourself. 

The campground has a large building where staff work, 14 rustic cabins, shower facilities. All guests have access to Wi-Fi and cable television. There are also outdoor grills available to all guests. 

2. Lake Guntersville State Park

Lake Guntersville State Park is located along the banks of the Tennessee River in Northeast Alabama. The park is home to 6000 acres of natural woodlands, making it a stunning location for hiking. However, it also has several recreational activities to enjoy such as an 18 hole championship golf course. There is also a series of ziplines for you to use. 

One of the most popular aspects of this park is the population of bald eagles in the area. This is one of the biggest homes to bald eagles in the country. Every year on select weekends in January and February the park’s Eagle Awareness programs entertain and educate guests on the country’s once endangered national symbol. 

3. Tims Ford State Park

Tims Ford State Park is located on the Tims Ford Reservoir and spans over 1321 acres. It also sits on the Tims Ford Lake, which is considered one of the most picturesque lakes in Tennessee.

The main campground here is open year round and it has 52 RV and tent campsites. All sites have 30 amp electric service and water hookups. There are also four sites that have sewer hookups. You will also find that there is a dump station that is located at the entrance to the campground. 

Furthermore, there are two centrally located bathhouses that you can use for hot showers and to go to the bathroom. There is also a playground on site for your kids to use. So, when you need to relax after a long day you can send your kids to the playground to entertain themselves. 

Campsites are limited to six people per site, and one RV and one tent per site. The maximum stay is 14 days from March to November. However, that is extended to 28 days during December, January, and February. 

4. Tomahawk Campground

At Tomahawk Campground you can set up your campsite in a field near the road, or you can go part way back into the woods for a little more privacy. Alternatively, you can hike 10 to 14 minutes down towards the creek if you really want your privacy. 

When you stay here you will just be a few minutes away from Duck River. On the river, you can enjoy fishing and boating. However, if you prefer to stay on land, you can enjoy the beautiful mountains in the area. They are home to several hiking and mountain biking trails. So, there is something for everyone to enjoy when you stay here. 

5. Joe Wheeler State Park

Joe Wheeler State Park has 116 campsites in total. 110 of those campsites come with full water, sewer, and electric hookups. There are three bathhouses in each section as well. Most sites are accommodating of RVs of any size. However, you will want to check with each site individually as sizes do vary. 

6. Honeycomb Campground

Honeycomb Campground is one of the most popular campgrounds in the area. There are currently 141 short and long term sites available. Most of the sites come with electric and water hookups. There is a dump station on site and a pumping station for campers that do not want to move their RV.

Additionally, the campground comes with a newly built general store and laundry room. So, you will not need to leave the campground if you are running low on supplies. Instead, you can stock up on everything at the general store. 

Additionally, the campground was newly renovated in 2009. As a result, most of the campsites are fresh and new. They are filled with modern amenities that should make your stay more comfortable. 

7. Decatur / Wheeler Lake KOA

KOA is known for having well maintained campgrounds with accommodating staff all throughout the country. The Decatur / Wheeler Lake KOA is another campground from KOA that provides everything guests need to be comfortable. 

The campground is in a beautiful setting with sites that overlook the water. Each site is tucked in with trees providing shade. So, if you want to have a carefree day at your campsite, you do not need to worry about overheating. However, if you want to have some fun you can head down to the water and use the boat ramp to get started on some water based activities. 

8. Fairview Devil Step Campground

Fairview Devil Step Campground provides water, electricity, and sewer hookups to all guests. Fires, alcohol, and pets are all allowed on site. Each campsite comes with a picnic table, Wi-Fi, and phone service. There is also a general store on site for you to stock up on things. Finally, there are showers that are centrally located for everyone to use. 

9. Goose Pond Colony

Goose Pond Colony is located on the banks of the Tennessee River’s Lake Guntersville. Not only is it a great place to set up your RV, but it is also a great spot to play some golf. It has two 18 hole championship golf courses nearby. However, if that is not your thing then you can enjoy relaxing by the waterfront or hiking on the many nearby trails.
