Is It Safe to Rent an RV?

It is very safe to rent an RV. All RV owners have been educated about how to clean their RV per CDC recommendations.

And, RVing and camping, in general, are socially distant activities. We go camping and never get within 100 feet of anyone if we don’t want to. Plus it is very easy to remain socially distant from others while hiking, biking, fishing, kayaking, and many other outdoor activities.

What Do I Need to Pack When I Rent an RV?

What you need to bring depends on what is included in your RV rental. Peer to peer RV rentals like on Outdoorsy usually have many items already included because the RV owner also uses the RV. So, most of what you need will be on board.

However, if you rent from an RV dealership or RV Rental Company, nothing is included. Most likely, you will need to pay for the add on packages and still stop at Walmart to buy things like a coffee pot, a toaster, a grill, etc.

But no matter where you rent, you are responsible for bringing groceries and your own camping supplies.

Do I Need a Special Driver’s License to Rent an RV in San Antonio, TX?

First let’s describe that there are three different types of RV’s to rent, which include motorhomes, travel trailers (including fifth wheels), and truck campers. Travel Trailers and Pop-ups are towed behind a truck or SUV and thus do not require any sort of special license or training. Class A motorhome and Class C motorhome options are also available to rent.

Driving the vast majority of motorhomes requires no special license either, and is easier than many newcomers think. You must be at least 25 years of age with a valid driver’s license however to rent most RVs. Some states do, however, require a special license for large motorhomes over a certain GVW (gross vehicle weight). 

Be sure to ask the RV owner you will be renting from if a special license is required. Typically though, you do not need a special license to drive an RV.

Will I Need a Security Deposit to Rent an RV?

Yes, you will need a security deposit to rent an RV. Just like anything you rent from a car to an apartment a security deposit is required.

Well, there are rentals available on Outdoorsy where the owner will deliver their camper right to your campsite, set everything up for you, give you an orientation tour, and then pick it back up at the end of your stay. It just doesn’t get any more convenient than that.

Some RV owners will provide the delivery and set up for free but most charge a fee for this service. It’s usually in the $100 range.

There is so much to do there that you might not have time to do it all in one trip. As a result, you will need to narrow down and prioritize which things are most important to do. Here are 10 of the best things to do in San Antonio.

1. Go on the San Antonio River Walk

The San Antonio River Walk is a network of cypress lined paved paths, quaint stone bridges, and lush landscapes that wind through the city. These paths allow visitors to see the beautiful natural scenery and take in the city views. The path itself runs along the San Antonio River and passes by many of the top attractions, restaurants, and venues in the city.

Furthermore, the River Walk has a section called the Museum Ranch. It is a 1.33 mile extension that has several visual and audiovisual works of art. Visitors are free to explore the paths on foot or on a bike.

2. Go to the San Antonio Missions National Historic Park

The San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is three miles from downtown and consists of four missions: Concepcion, San Jose, San Juan, and Espada. These missions were built in the 1700s to expand the Spanish influence from Mexico to the north. They were built as Indian towns with the Catholic Church serving as the town focus.

Another popular attraction in the area is the 270 year old irrigation system. The system consists of an aqueduct, a dam, and a path that is 10 miles long. This trail is perfect for bird watching and hiking.

3. Visit the Alamo

The Alamo is a complex located on Alamo Plaza in downtown San Antonio and it is one of the most popular attractions in the state. The complex is a famous crossroads in Texan history where several historical events took place. Events like the first Spanish colonization, the independence of Mexico, and the Confederacy standing their ground took place here.

Famously, this location is known for when a small band of Texans held out here for 13 days against General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. It became a symbol of courage and sacrifice for the cause of liberty.

4. Check Out the Natural Bridge Caverns

The Natural Bridge Caverns are some of the largest known caves and caverns in the United States. They are named for the 60 foot long natural limestone slab bridge that spans the entrance of the caves.

When in the caves you have plenty of things to see and do. You can go panning for gems and fossils like minors, or you can explore the different cave paths.

A fun thing to do is to go on the Hidden Passage Tour. Here you will need to find your way through the 5000 square foot outdoor maze. You can then zip line through the sky above the caverns. When you are all finished there are several restaurants and bars for you to enjoy.

5. Visit the San Antonio Botanical Garden

The San Antonio Botanical Garden is a 38 acre garden that lets visitors get a good look at nature. The garden has several collections and exhibits with seasonal displays. This includes a rose garden, a sensory garden, and a Kumamoto En Japanese Garden. There are over 250 species of plant housed here that represent three separate ecosystems.

Visitors can enjoy self guided or docent led tours. You can also go on a bird watching walk and enjoy one of the many lectures.

6. Head Over to the Institute of Texan Cultures

The Institute of Texan Cultures is part of the University of Texas. The purpose of the institute is to investigate and promote ethnic, heritage, historical, and social issues through a series of exhibits, events, and programs. The museum itself celebrates the stories of immigrants who made a life for themselves in Texas.

Established in 1965, the facility has 65,000 square feet of interactive displays and exhibits. It is also just a short walk from the River Walk and the Alamo.

7. Go to the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch

If your kids have been getting antsy exploring the city, you should bring them to the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch. This 400 acre natural safari park is on the outskirts of San Antonio and is home to zebras, giraffes, buffalo, and many other exotic animals. The 343 acre park was established in 1899 and is on the banks of the San Antonio River. It also includes the Japanese Tea Garden, the San Antonio Zoo, the Sunken Garden Theatre, and several pavilions for events throughout the year.

If you are a runner, you will love going on a River City Run. This is a unique running tour that goes through the heart of San Antonio. It caters to runners of all ages and levels. 1. Medina Lake RV Campground

Medina Lake RV Campground is located in the Texas Hill Country just outside of San Antonio. The resort has a plethora of wildlife for you to see and a junior Olympic sized pool for you to relax in. While staying here you will also enjoy lakeside views.

At the park, there are several shaded sites with picnic tables and barbeque grills. There is also a café that serves meals on the weekend. The park also has lots of friendly staff that will help you out with anything you need.

2. Guadalupe River State RV Park and Campground

Guadalupe River RV Park and Campground is a beautiful park with four miles of river frontage. When you set up your RV you will be just steps away from the river where you can fish, swim, tube, and canoe.

If you prefer to stay on land you can hike, ride mountain bikes, or bird watch in the surrounding area. Fishing gear is available for rent at the park.

The camp has 85 water and electric campsites and 9 tent sites.

3. Blanco State Park

The park is open all year round, but it is highly recommended that you make a reservation. Reservations are available up to one year in advance and are for up to one month.

The RV sites are big rig friendly and offer full water, electric, and sewer hookups. There is a dump station, a playground, and a picnic area on site. There are also showers and a laundry facility. You will also have a fitness center to use while you stay here. Most pets are allowed except for Pit Bulls and Rottweilers.

7. Boulderdash Cabin & RV Park

Boulderdash Cabin & RV Park is a very small and family friendly RV park. There are only 3 RV sites available. One has 50 amp service and the other has 30 amp service. All of them have water and sewer hookups. Additionally, there are two tent sites available.

While staying here you will have a beautiful view of the wildlife in the area. There are several hiking trails nearby, and you will have river access. This is a great place to stay if you want a more authentic camping experience. Since there are so few people staying here at a time it will feel more remote, and you will not need to worry about noisy neighbors as much.

8. Barefoot Camp & RV Park

Barefoot Camp & RV Park is a privately owned campground that is surrounded by a working cattle ranch. They are located three miles from the Colorado River in the scenic Texas Hill Country. The park has 38 pull thru RV sites available. There are also 9 covered shelters available along the Colorado River.

9. Potters Creek Park

Potters Creek Park is situated on the northern shore of Canyon Lake. The facilities are open all year round and offer RV and tent sites. The RV sites all have full electric and water hookups. Sites come with picnic tables, a grill, and a fire ring.

Additionally, some site amenities include flush toilets, showers, drinking water, and two dump stations. There are also two boat ramps with docks and a fishing pier. There is also a sandy beach for you to relax on.
