Things to Do in Lafayette, Louisiana

If you are traveling to Lafayette for the first time, there are a few things you should see. The city is not the most well known, but it has some popular tourist attractions that you might enjoy. So, when you want to take a break from the campsite, you can head into the city and enjoy what it has to offer.

1. Visit Avery Island

Ok, this is not technically in the city, but it is close enough and worth checking out, especially if you are a hot sauce fan. It also is not actually an island like you might think. Instead, it is a small dome that extends eight miles beneath the Earth’s surface. You might hear the people in Lafayette say that it is where salt and pepper meet. That is because the creators of the famous Tabasco hot pepper sauce started their company on Avery Island in 1868.

Visiting Avery Island makes for an easy day trip. It is only 20 miles south of the city, and you can take a self-guided tour inside the museum to see the processing of the pepper plants. You can then check out the tasting room and test out the different types of Tabasco sauce. The buildings are also numbered, so you should be able to navigate things relatively easily.

There are also tours and cooking classes available for you if you like. Additionally, you should get lunch at the 1868 restaurant where they have several meals featuring Tabasco sauce.

2. The Jungle Gardens

If you want to stay closer to nature, you can check out the Jungle Gardens on Avery Island. This is a 170 acre botanical garden and bird sanctuary that resulted from Edward McIlhenny’s conservation efforts. It is one of his many contributions to the city of Lafayette.

The grounds of the garden are bordered by Bayou Petite Anse, making it worth it to spend the day on a self-guided tour. You also do not need to worry about getting lost because you can pick up an easy to follow map at the visitor center.

The garden is filled with beautiful, old oak trees draped with plenty of Spanish moss. You will also see lots of working boats returning form the Gulf.  One of the biggest highlights of the garden is the centuries old Buddha that sits in its own pavilion atop a large lotus blossom.

3. Visit Delcambre

Another great location to visit near Lafayette is Delcambre. It is a coastal fishing town that is just down the road from the city. Local shrimp boats head out early in the morning and return in the afternoon with fresh shrimp. You can buy the fresh shrimp right off the boat. However, if you miss out on the boats, you can purchase fresh shrimp from the market.

4. Explore Downtown

Lafayette is a relatively small city, especially for a major tourist destination. It is also very spread out which is common for small cities. It is filled with several interesting shops, retail chains, and restaurants. You should head to the crossroads of Pinhook Road and Evangeline to find some of the more unique shops and restaurants in the city.

Additionally, the area around Jefferson Street is walkable from downtown and is filled with many historic shops. This makes it a great location for photo ops if that is something you are interested in. Locals are also very friendly and will give you recommendations on which restaurants and shops to check out.

5. Visit Vermilionville and Acadian Village

Lafayette has two villages that give you a real sense of its history, Vermilionville, and Acadian Village. Vermilionville has a Cajun and Creole living history museum. It includes 7 original structures that were just restored 20 years ago. All tours are self-guided, but you can get information in the building from a plethora of historians.

6. Dance to Live Music at an Acadiana Dancehall

If you want to experience the local culture, there is no better way to see it and show than at the Acadiana Dancehall. It will give you your fill of dancing for months to come. They specialize in a Cajun beat but do not let that stop you from joining in if you are not familiar. The simple steps are easy to learn and the locals are more than willing to help you out.

7. Craft Beer

One of the best things to do any time you visit a new location is trying out the craft beer from the area. Lafayette is no different as the Cajun Brewing Company has 15 rotating taps. You will be able to enjoy the best flavors in the area at this brewery.

8. Visit Jefferson Island and Rip Van Winkle Garden

If you need something to do in the afternoon you can head out to Jefferson Island. It is only a half hour to the south and it is an interesting tourist destination. It is built in the style of a Southern plantation from 1870, and it is the centerpiece of the Rip Van Winkle Garden.

The garden is surrounded by cypress and 350 year old oak trees. It also includes fountains, statues, and even peacocks.

The KOA Kampground of Lafayette is a very family oriented park as it has lots of activities for families to enjoy. It has concrete pads that are level and spacious enough for even the biggest RVs.

As far as campgrounds go, you can ask for much more than what this one offers. It has two swimming pools, a lake, outdoor games, playgrounds, a mini golf course, and a full game room. So, if you have kids, they will never run out of things to do. 2. Acadia Park Campground

The Acadia Park campground is an affordable option for those of you that are working with a budget in mind. It is also a great choice if you have plans to explore the city more than you plan on hanging out at the campsite. It is so close that you can walk to downtown if you would like. However, the park itself is quite beautiful, so you should consider spending a little time at the campsite.

The campground is great for holding a cookout or small gathering. It has a golf course and playground nearby, so you can keep yourself and your family entertained. Additionally, the staff are very helpful and will give you tips on things you can see and do in Lafayette.

3. Bayou Wilderness RV Resort

The Bayou Wilderness RV Resort is located only a few minutes away from Lafayette and is a great spot to stay. When you are at this campground you can take part in all kinds of activities on site, or you can head into the city to enjoy the nightlife.

If you enjoy staying active, this is the campground for you as it has private tennis courts for you to enjoy. 4. Frog City RV Park

The Frog City RV Park is 10 miles west of Lafayette and is located in the city of Dunson. It sits on a beautiful plot of land out in nature. It is surrounded by plenty of local attractions such as casinos and the Cajun dome. This is one of the best options if all the campgrounds in Lafayette are booked.

This is a great site because it is quite large, so there is space for kids to run around. Additionally, the pads are leveled off and clean.
