What Do I Need to Pack When I Rent an RV?

What you need to bring depends on what is included in your RV rental. Peer to peer RV rentals like on Outdoorsy usually have many items already included because the RV owner also uses the RV. So, most of what you need will be on board.

However, if you rent from an RV dealership or RV Rental Company, nothing is included. Most likely, you will need to pay for the add on packages and still stop at Walmart to buy things like a coffee pot, a toaster, a grill, etc.

1. Go to the Kentucky Derby Museum

If you are going to Louisville, you need to check out the Kentucky Derby Museum. It celebrates the history and the glory of the Kentucky Derby. As a celebration of one of the most famous sports events in the world, this is one of the most popular attractions in the region.

In the museum, you will find an array of world class exhibits. This includes the Guinness World Record’s Largest Horseshoe, Resident Thoroughbred, and Miniature Horse, and The World’s Greatest Race. Admission to the museum comes with a tour of the historic racetrack.

2. Visit Churchill Downs

Once you are finished at the museum you might want to check out Churchill Downs itself. It is the home of the Kentucky Derby and the Kentucky Oaks. These are two of the longest running sporting events in the United States.

The venue was first opened in 1875, and today the track hosts three race meets every year. Additionally, it has hosted the Breeder’s Cup World Championship eight times.

It was converted into a pedestrian and bike bridge in 1969 and earned the nickname of the Bridge That Goes Nowhere.

At either end of the bridge, you will find urban green spaces. These areas feature lawns, fountains, pavilions, and playgrounds for your kids to use.

5. Head Over to the Muhammad Ali Center

Those of you that are boxing fans, you will want to check out the Muhammad Ali Center. It is a cultural center and museum entirely devoted to World Champion boxer Muhammad Ali. The museum originally opened in 2005 and is now part of Museum Row in the West Main District of Louisville.

The building stands six stories tall, and it has a 40,000 square foot, two level theater. There are also interactive exhibits, galleries, and a plaza for you to check out. A walkway that connects the center to other downtown attractions was added in 2013.

Louisville Waterfront Park is a municipal park that sits on the Ohio River. The park first opened in 1999 and had 55 acres of land at the time. Since then it has expanded to 85 acres.

Beckley Creek Park is a large park on the east side of downtown Louisville. It is just south of Valhalla Golf Club, and it is part of the Parklands of Floyds Fork system. As a result, it has several trails for you to explore and picnic areas for you to relax at.

A popular part of the park is the Egg Lawn, a 22 acre egg shaped lawn. This area is a great spot to play soccer, throw around a frisbee, or fly a kite.

Locust Grove is an 18^th century farm and mansion that is now listed as a U.S. National Historic Landmark. This 55 acre site includes a 1792 Georgian mansion built by William and Lucy Clark Croghan. Mrs. Croghan was also the sister of William Clark of the famous Lewis and Clark expedition. They stayed here after returning from their adventure.

Additionally, several presidents have visited here over the years like James Monroe and Andrew Jackson. The mansion was purchased by the city and opened to the public in 1964.

9. Go to Old Louisville

Old Louisville is a historic district located on the north side of the University of Louisville. It consists of 48 city blocks, and it is the third largest historic district in the country. Additionally, it is the largest district that consists almost exclusively of Victorian architecture.

Clifty Falls is located near Madison and is a beautiful location with hiking trails, waterfalls, and the Ohio River to enjoy. It is such a lovely place that you might not ever want to leave to visit the other nearby attractions.

2. Elkhorn Campground

Elkhorn Campground has been a family owned RV campground since 1987. Located in Frankfort, the capital of Kentucky, on the bank of Elkhorn Creek. The park is open from the start of April to the end of October every year. There are limited camping sites available during the winter months. While the park is open and in full swing there are 125 sites available, with 109 of them being paved. 61 of these sites come with full hookups and cable TV. There are also options for big rigs.

This is a family oriented campground with amenities that every member of the family needs. There is a pool for you to cool off in, and there is a mini golf course for you to have some fun. Alternatively, you can play a game of horseshoes, or have some fun on the volleyball, and basketball courts. Children will enjoy the playground, and adults will be happy to hear that there is a general store for you to restock on anything you need.

3. Lake Shelby Campground

Lake Shelby is another option available to you with water, electric, and sewer hookups. Fires, alcohol, and pets are allowed on site. Each site also comes with a picnic table and fire pit. Finally, you will find that there are showers and restrooms centrally located on the campground.

4. Otter Creek Park Campground

Otter Creek Park Campground is one of the smaller RV campgrounds that you will find. However, the sites that are available come with full hookups. To stay here you need to make a reservation, so you cannot just come here and hope to find an opening, reservations are required. Additionally, reservations must be paid in full and there are no refunds.

Kentucky River Campground is a great place to stay if you want to spend a lot of time relaxing at your campground. Here you will have access to sites with full electric, water, and sewer hookups.
