Springfield is home to Missouri State University and is an hour north of Branson in the southern part of the state. So, here are some of the best things to do when you get to Springfield, Missouri.

1. Head to Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield

Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield is operated and administered by the National Park Service. They provide tours for visitors on the site of the second major battle of the Civil War. Back in 1861, this was a seemingly silent landscape, but it eventually erupted into chaos as Union and Confederate soldiers made it a battlefield.

Today, visitors come to this historic space to see how the battle took place. Along the 4.9 mile road, there are 8 interpretive sites that are close to hiking trails while providing parking. You will be able to get more information about the battle from the visitors center. It is open seven days a week and has detailed exhibits. This includes a Civil War research library and a 30 minute film. It is only closed on major holidays.

2. Go See the Wonders of the Wildlife National Museum and Aquarium

If you have kids that just want to see animals, this is the place to bring them. In the aquarium, you will see that it has more than one and a half million gallons of water that host thousands of fish. In the museum portion of the aquarium, you will find massive ocean environments, historic boating vessels, and underwater tunnels for you to check out some river monsters.

Additionally, the museum is host to an extensive collection of 4D wildlife dioramas. The displays range from the African savanna to the Arctic tundra. Each exhibit has incredible detail and added effects like noise and lighting.

3. Visit Nathanael Greene/ Close Memorial Park

This park provides guests with more than 100 acres of manicured space to place, picnic, and relax. Near the park, you will find the Springfield Botanical Gardens, and in these gardens, you will find 21 different garden beds, hundreds of flowers, and the Dr. Bill Roston Native Butterfly House.

4. Check Out the Fantastic Caverns

The Fantastic Caverns are located 10 miles north of downtown and perfectly exemplify the karst landscape that defines the majority of the Missouri underground. In the caves, you will notice that they have a fragile backdrop of ancient features.

However, you will not be able to see them alone as the only way to check them out is on a 55 minute jeep drawn tram ride. This is the only ride through cave system tour in America. As a result, you will be able to learn about the cave systems in a way that you cannot anywhere else in the country.

The cave systems really do live up to its name. The caves are magnificent, featuring columns, soda straws, and cave bacon. You will also notice that the caves are around 60 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the entire year.

5. Visit the Mizumoto Japanese Stroll Garden

This garden is connected to the Nathanael Greene, Close Memorial Park on the southwest side of the city. In the garden, you will find a traditional Japanese garden landscaping spread over seven acres. While there you will be able to see popular features like the meditation garden, moon bridge, and a large koi lake.

6. Go to the Springfield Art Museum

This museum is dedicated to documenting and displaying significant cultural works from southwest Missouri and abroad. It is the oldest cultural institution in the city. Currently, there are over 10,000 works of art in the museum.

7. Head to the Route 66 Car Museum

If you are a car fanatic, you cannot come to Springfield without heading to the Route 66 Car Museum. It is a privately owned collection of cars that will get any fan of cars excited. The collection has cars that range from Brass era automobiles to classic movie and television rides.

There are more than 70 cars, trucks, and other vehicles on display at the museum. One of the most popular cars is the prize winning German Horch, the same trick that starred in the 1940 film, The Grapes of Wrath.

The Hootentown Canoe Rental & Campground is next to the James River which is only a few miles outside of Springfield. The river itself is one of the top draws for this park as it allows you to enjoy several water based activities. When you come back to the campground, you will get to have a great meal from the on site restaurant. Or you can make your own meal with the groceries you pick up from the convenience store on site.

4. Lambert’s Café RV Park

Lambert’s Café RV Park is a basic facility without any recreational activities. The only true standout part of the RV park is that it is right next to the famous café for which it is named.

At this RV park, you will not need to share your hookups with other guests. Each campsite has all the equipment necessary to accommodate one rig.

5. Rustic Meadows RV Park

The Rustic Meadows RV Park is along interstate 44 and passes north of downtown Springfield. The park has pull through sites and friendly managers. There are ongoing improvements going on at the site, so it might not be ideal right now. However, it might be a great option in the future.

If you do end up staying here, you will be in a secluded location. So, this is a great option if you are not fascinated by seeing much of the city. Instead, you can relax and enjoy the outdoor activities that the area has to offer.

This RV park has paved roads with long concrete sites that accommodate almost all travel vehicles, no matter the size. There are small strips of grass that separate the spaces. Additionally, each site has a picnic table.

The managers at this RV park make an effort to ensure that every guest is comfortable. They are also partnering with a close by business called Antique Mercantile which you can use to get your vehicle washed.

7. Ozark Branson RV Park

The Ozark Branson RV Park is in Ozark and near U.S. Route 65. Although the name implies that it is close to Branson, it is actually closer to Springfield and all its attractions.

While staying here, you can park your RV and take day trips to nearby places of interest. If you have little ones you should head to Silver Dollar City. It is a theme park with rides and shows that are only 40 minutes away.

8. James River Outfitters

James River Outfitters is a campground that provides guests with lots of space. It is close to the James River, and as a result, the campground is known for providing guests with the opportunity to experience several water based activities. You also do not need to worry about the state of the park as the owners make sure that everything is clean and well maintained.

Additionally, the park owns and operates a shuttle service that will take you to different spots on the river. So, you can pick your spot, grab your floaties, and relax as you flow down the river.

9. America’s Best Campground

The final campground we are going to look at is America’s Best Campground. While it might not actually be the best campground in the country like the name suggests, it is certainly one of the best options in the area. Springfield is roughly 50 miles south of the park, so you can spend some time away from the hustle and bustle of the city. However, if you want to head into town the highway is easily accessible from the park.

This part of Missouri is incredibly hilly, and as a result, this campground is built on a slope. This means that the gravel sites are not all completely level.
