We have taken our Class C and Class A RVs off-road before, but I would not describe either of them as off-road RVs. They aren’t built to ride on rough terrain and can really only go off-road under ideal conditions.
With an off-road RV, you can go anywhere and everywhere, no matter the conditions. Let’s examine what makes an off-road RV and the best off-road RVs in every category.
What Are Off-Road RVs?
Off-road RVs are RVs that are equipped with features like:
- Higher clearance
- Off-road tires
- Upgraded suspension
- Four-wheel drive
- Skid plates, side rails, and other added protective components
These features let off-road RVs take on uneven rocky terrain, poor traction, and anything else that nature throws at them.
Off-road RVs are also frequently off-grid RVs, designed not just to drive off-road but to survive off the beaten path for extended periods of time.
Due to this, many off-road RVs have features like powerful cooling, heating, and insulation to make them liveable even in extreme weather conditions. They commonly have solar power systems and large water tanks so you can stay off-grid longer.

Why Do People Flip Travel Trailer Axles?
People flip their travel trailer axles to heighten their overall ground clearance. It’s helpful when traveling over some nasty, off-road terrain, and the clearance is necessary to avoid damaging the underside of the trailer. It also improves available space for tanks and increases stabilizer protection.
Of course, some inherent risks are involved, especially if it’s your first time doing it or you make a mistake. If you do the job poorly, you can damage the axle or pull the trailer completely off of it. It also reduces rear visibility, makes the trailer more difficult to climb up into, reduces fuel mileage, and changes the weight distribution.
What Are The Best Types of Off-Road RVs?
Overland vehicles are without a doubt the best RV type for off-roading. These heavy-duty RVs are commonly built on truck chassis like the Mercedes, Freightliner, or Ford truck chassis. They typically feature off-road tires, upgraded suspensions, and all-wheel-drive systems.
The living areas of overland vehicles are constructed of extremely durable materials that can withstand extreme outside conditions.
What Is Overlanding?
Overlanding is a term for heading out into the great unknown—remote travel, off-grid and off-road, with a primary goal of experiencing something you can’t get at a national park or traditional campground. It’s the ultimate, long-term boondocking expedition and often requires an off-roading vehicle and travel trailer.
Overlanding requires a lot of preparation because cell signals are likely non-existent and water, power, food, and basic accommodations won’t be readily available. Overlanding is not one of those things where if you forget something, you can just drive to the local town in less than five or ten minutes and pick it up.
How Big Of A Travel Trailer Can A Jeep Wrangler Tow?
Jeep Wranglers are primarily associated with rugged, off-road lifestyles, so they aren’t often thought of as towing vehicles. After all, when a Jeep is towing, its off-road capabilities are diminished. However, if need be, some Jeep Wranglers, depending on the Wrangler, are capable of towing up to 3,500 lbs.
Since there are different available trims, some Wranglers can only handle 2,000 lbs. Either way, you’re looking at smaller travel trailers. The good news is that some of the most rugged, off-road, off-grid travel trailers are well within the limits of 3,500 lbs.
- Eclipse RV Moxi and Mojo
- Taxa Cricket Overland
- Travel Lite RV Rove Lite
- AntiShanty AS-1
- Escapod TOPO2
- Tentrax Overlook
- Sunnyside Off-Road Boony Stomper
- Signature Deluxe II
There are many more options than just the above list, but it will give you an idea of what your Jeep Wrangler is capable of towing. There’s a lot more variety out there than you think.
Final Thoughts on the Best Off-Road RVs
Off-road RVs feature tough construction and unique features like higher clearance, off-road tires, and, of course, upgraded suspensions to take on the challenges of the path less traveled. They’re typically well equipped for off-grid living, with large water tanks, solar power systems, and more.
The best off-road RVs are overland vehicles, but no matter what category of RV you’re looking for, there’s an off-road RV for you. With any of the choices on our list of the best off-road RVs, you’ll be ready and well-equipped to get off the beaten path and go wherever the adventure takes you.
