When you get to Grand Junction, there are several things for you to do. It is an area packed with beautiful scenery and nature. There are also some cool things you can see in the city. As a result, you might not know where to start. So, we compiled a list of 10 things you can do in Grand Junction.

1. Visit the Colorado National Monument

One of the first things you should consider doing when you get to Grand Junction is visiting the Colorado National Monument. The monument features a stunning landscape of red rock in beautiful formations. It is believed that the rock formations here vary in age between 140 million years and over one billion years. As a result, you can see firsthand the fascinating effects erosion has on the rock.

When you get to the monument, there are several canyons around for you to explore. You can drive around, take your bike, or you can even walk around the area. There are also several hiking trails for you to enjoy.

Maps are available in the visitor’s center, and there is a short orientation film for you to watch. They are located near the Saddlehorn Campground.

2. Visit the Children’s Nature Center

A lot of people that rent RVs go on vacations with children. As a result, you need to do some things that will keep them entertained. After all, they probably will not be as satisfied lying around and relaxing as you will be. So, you can take them to the Children’s Nature Center.

In the nature center, you will see all kinds of creatures in a naturalistic setting. This museum is the only living museum in the area, and it is the home to over 120 animals, reptiles, insects, and marine creatures.

The center features freshwater and marine tanks where your kids can see giant stingrays, minute horses, and even colorful corals. Additionally, there is a petting tank available so that your kids can see what some of these creatures feel like. They will also love the reptile collection as it is home to many snakes, lizards, and frogs.

3. Visit the Avalon Theater

If you want a break from nature, you can head downtown to the Avalon Theater for a show. The theater was built in 1923 and was recently restored to its original grandeur. It is now one of the largest performing arts venues in Colorado.

The theater has a regular lineup of first run movies, independent productions, and foreign films. The theater also hosts theatrical performances, dance recitals, and concerts. It can hold over 1000 guests.

4. Check Out the Museums in Western Colorado

The Museum of Western Colorado consists of three separate facilities and four outdoor paleontology sites. At these sites, you can personally dig for fossils and relics.

The museum has artifacts that display Native American history and culture. They have exhibits that display historical pieces from Spanish exploration. In the exhibits you can listen to audio stations and learn all there is to know about that time period.

Additionally, you can check out the Dinosaur Journey Museum to learn everything you could ever want to know about the Jurassic Period.

5. Visit the Wine Country

Who doesn’t love a good glass of wine, and who wouldn’t want a freshly squeezed glass? On your trip, you can head out to a few of the over 80 wineries that exist in Colorado. These are the highest altitude wineries in the United States. The best time to visit wine country in Colorado is from March to May. This is when the harvest has taken place and wineries are offering spring tastings and food.

However, if you visit in September you can go to the annual Colorado Mountain Winefest.

6. Cross Orchards Historic Site

If you decide to take a trip to the Cross Orchards Historic Site, you can see how the pioneering settlers lived in the early 1900s. Back in those days, the orchards were comprised of 22,000 fruit trees and were operated as an agricultural showcase. Now, you can go to these areas and watch costumed guides do the daily chores that would have been done by settlers almost 100 years ago.

Additionally, there are plenty of historical buildings for you to check out. In the building, you can see what a settler’s small home looked like back then. You can check out the kitchen, pantry, and even the cook’s quarters.

7. Visit James M. Robb-Colorado River State Park

This state park is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Colorado. In 2005 it was renamed after James M. Robb for his planning of the outdoor facility. The park covers five distinct districts, the Island Acres, Corn Lake, Colorado River Wildlife Area, Connected Lakes, and Fruita.

When you head to the area you can plan out a few days of camping on one of the campgrounds. While there you can enjoy fishing, white water rafting, and kayaking. If you prefer to stay on land, there are plenty of hiking trailers for you to check out.

8. Little Books Cliffs Wild Horse Area

Wild horses are a rare sight as most of them have been domesticated. However, Colorado has one of the few areas where you can see horses out in the wild. The Wild Horse Area covers more than 36,000 acres of wilderness and is the home of close to 150 wild horses.

While you are in the area you can walk on a few of the hiking trails. However, if you do not want to walk you can take out your 4×4.

9. Visit the Western Colorado Botanical Gardens

If you want to see some of the beautiful nature that Grand Junction has to offer, head out to the Western Colorado Botanical Gardens. Regardless of the time of year, you will be able to find something in bloom in one of the three themed gardens.

Depending on the time of year, you can find exotic orchids, bananas, and chili peppers blooming in the gardens. Additionally, you can see turtles and koi fish in the ponds.

Grand Junction is not just a great place to take your RV because there are lots of things to do. It is also great because there are several campgrounds available that suit your needs. They are filled with excellent amenities and are in beautiful locations. Here we will look at 10 of the best RV campgrounds in the Grand Junction area.

1. Junction West RV Park

Junction West RV Park is located in Grand Junction at it is a clean and relaxing place for RV campers to stay. It provides easy access to the interstate and is located close to fuel stations. It is also just a short drive away from the downtown restaurants and shops.

This is the highest rated Good Sam RV Park in Grand Junction. It has air conditioned facilities, a laundry room, and a rec room. The bathrooms and showers are always kept very clean.

Additionally, the is propane on site and a convenience store so that you do not need to go into town for basic supplies. There is also a splash pad so that your children are kept entertained.

2. Grand Junction KOA

The Grand Junction KOA campground is located just off Highway 50. It is another campground that has all the accommodations you will need, no matter the size of your RV.

The campground is known for having a plethora of amenities. There is a mini-golf course that is managed by friendly staff, and a convenience store so that you can grab a snack at any time.

3. RV Ranch at Grand Junction

The RV Ranch at Grand Junction is located in Clifton, Colorado, and is just a 10 minute drive away from Grand Junction. You can see the campground from the I-70, and all rigs are welcome, no matter the size.

The RV Ranch offers some of the best RV camping in all of Colorado. It has a heated pool horseshoe pit and shuffleboard. It is in a beautiful location, and there are enough things to do that your kids will be entertained.

4. Monument RV Resort

The Monument RV Resort is located in Fruita, Colorado, but it is only a 20 minute drive from Grand Junction. Big rigs are welcome to stay at this location as well, so there are no sizing issues. The park is also incredibly easy to navigate, so you will not be getting lost any time soon. Additionally, this is one of the best campgrounds for viewing the Colorado National Monument.

The biggest reason to stay here is to get an extraordinary view of the Colorado National Monument. However, with the campground also within walking distance of many restaurants and shops, there are plenty of other things to do. It is also in a great location for hiking or riding ATVs. Alternatively, you can kick back, relax, and enjoy the scenic location.

5. Grand Mesa RV Park

The Grand Mesa RV Park is only 30 minutes East of Grand Junction. It resides in the town of Mesa along the I-70. There is a slight limit in sizing as there is the only parking available for RVs under 50 feet. While this is a limitation, it should not be an issue for most people. This is one of the best campgrounds for accessing the Grand Mesa National Forest.

Since the campground is so close to the Grand Mesa National Forest, it is also one of the most scenic campsites you will find. It is also one of the smallest parks as there are only 24 spaces available. This makes it a perfect choice if you prefer a quieter atmosphere.

There is also a general store on site so that you do not need to head out into the city for anything small.

6. Valley Sunset RV Ranch

The Valley Sunset RV Ranch is one of the best options if you are traveling with a budget. It is cheaper than most of the other campgrounds you will find. Unfortunately, it is a bit further from Grand Junction as a result. It is located in Delta, Colorado, which is 50 miles outside of Grand Junction.

This campground is accessible from the highway, and it accommodates all RV sizes. It is also a quiet, shady park that makes for a great home base, especially if you are traveling to many different locations around Colorado.

7. Glenwood Canyon Resort

The Glenwood Canyon Resort is also quite far from Grand Junction as it is 85 miles away in Glenwood Springs. It is a big-rig friendly site, and it has everything you need on site.

If you want to enjoy the Grand Junction area, but you enjoy the Western Slope, this is a great option for you. It will give you a beautiful view of the mountains while still being within an hour and a half drive of all the best tourist destinations.

Additionally, the campground gives access to the Colorado River which is a great location for fishing and rafting. There is also a zip line and climbing wall for you to enjoy.

8. Aspen Trails RV & Campground

The Aspen Trails RV & Campground is located 53 miles from Grand Junction. It is surrounded by the Grand Mesa National Forest. It can also accommodate almost all rigs as the limit is 75 feet.

This is a great location if you want a cozy camping experience. It has a family friendly café, and it is in a beautiful location.

9. Moon Dance RV Park

The Moon Dance RV Park is located in Grand Junction right off the I-70. It has 60 foot pull through sites to accommodate almost any RV.

This campground is located close to nearly every service you could think of. There are restaurants, shops, and convenience stores within walking distance. It is also very close to some of the most popular tourist destinations that the area has to offer. This is a great place to stay no matter if you are staying for one night or for a long time.

10. Saddlehorn Campground

The Saddlehorn Campground is the only official campground at the Colorado National Monument. As a result, it gets a lot of love from RV owners. Located just 17 miles outside of Grand Junction, the Saddlehorn is a government run campground. Unfortunately, it does not currently have big rig accommodations.

The Saddlehorn Campground gives RV campers a place to get away from all their stresses and enjoy the beautiful Colorado National Monument. There are not many man made amenities, but the natural amenities more than make up for it.
