A lot of small campers make you feel like youโre giving up too much.
Too little storage. Too little kitchen space. Too cramped to enjoy. And sometimes the bathroom is barely usable.
Thatโs why this weekโs video is interesting.
We looked at two very small travel trailers that both come in at 3,500 pounds or less, but they still manage to offer some features people usually expect in a bigger RV. One of them even gives you a dry bath, which is not something you see every day in this weight class.
If youโre a first-time buyer, a couple looking for a simple weekend camper, or somebody who wants a lightweight trailer that an SUV or small truck may be able to tow, these are exactly the kinds of RVs worth comparing.
The two campers in this weekโs video are the KZ RV Sportsmen Classic 130RD and the Venture RV Sienna Light 140VFD. Theyโre both compact. Theyโre both lightweight. But they definitely do not feel the same once you step inside.
And between the two, we like the Venture RV Sienna 140VFD better because it gives you a better shower, more storage, and more usable kitchen space.

Why Campers Under 3,500 lbs Get So Much Attention
This size category matters because it opens the door for a lot more buyers.
Not everybody wants a giant truck and a long travel trailer. A lot of people want something simple thatโs easier to tow, easier to store, easier to back up, and easier to manage on weekend trips.
Thatโs especially true for:
- first-time RV buyers
- couples
- small families
- SUV owners
- small truck owners
- people who want a no-drama camper
The tradeoff is space.
So the real question is not just whether a trailer is light enough. The real question is whether it still feels useful and comfortable once you get inside.
Thatโs where these two campers get interesting.

KZ RV Sportsmen Classic 130RD Floor Plan

When you walk into this camper, the bed is up front, the kitchen runs along the side, the dinette sits across from it, and the bathroom is in the rear.
Itโs a very simple layout, and thatโs part of the appeal.
There are no slide-outs. Nothing complicated. It feels like an entry-level camper in the best sense of the word.
๐ What We Like About the KZ Sportsmen 130RD
The biggest strength of this camper is how approachable it is.
If youโre new to RVing, this is the kind of trailer that wonโt overwhelm you. Itโs short, light, and simple. That alone makes it appealing.
I also like the front bed area. The bed measures about 80 inches by 54 inches, which makes it a residential full-size bed. For a camper this small, thatโs respectable. Two people can sleep there comfortably enough for weekend trips, and the windows on both ends let you get a good cross breeze. Thereโs also storage underneath that connects to the exterior compartment.
The inline kitchen is laid out well for the size too.
I like that the two-burner propane cooktop runs front to back instead of side to side because that preserves more counter space. The sink is deep enough to actually be useful, and the gooseneck faucet helps. Youโve also got a microwave, overhead storage, and enough counter space for a small trailer to make weekend camping realistic.
The dinette is another practical feature. It works well for two people, has storage under both booths, and can convert into a small extra bed for a child. Thereโs also an outlet there, which makes it more useful as a workspace or overflow kitchen prep area.
โ ๏ธ What You Should Know About the KZ Before You Buy
This is where the compromises show up.
The bathroom has everything you need, but the corner shower is tight. Really tight. Thatโs the biggest drawback. It works, but itโs the kind of shower you tolerate rather than enjoy. If youโre only taking quick weekend trips, you may not care much. But if bathroom comfort matters to you, this is not the strong point of this trailer.
Thereโs also no shower surround and no real built-in place for soap and shampoo, so it feels pretty stripped down in there. Thatโs part of how they keep the trailer light and affordable, but itโs still a compromise.
The mini fridge is another place where you may feel the size limits, especially if you like to pack a lot of food or drinks. Mike even mentions that he and Susan would want a countertop ice maker because the freezer space would not cut it for them on a weekend. Thatโs exactly the kind of real-life detail buyers should think about before purchasing.

Venture RV Sienna Light 140VFD Floor Plan

This camper has the dinette up front, the mid-bath and kitchen in the middle, and the bed in the rear.
That layout works better for me.
It gives the camper a little more separation between the living side and the sleeping side, which helps it feel more complete instead of feeling like everything is crammed into one small room.
๐ What We Like About the Venture RV Sienna 140VFD
This is the one we would pick.
The biggest win here is balance.
This camper still comes in under 3,500 pounds, but it feels like it gives you more of the things people actually care about once they start camping.
The dry bath is the headline feature. That matters. A dry bath in a camper this size is a real selling point. The shower is still basic, but itโs more usable than what you get in the KZ. The shower measures about 36 inches wide by 22 inches deep, with about 6’1″ of height to the ceiling and about 6’5″ into the fan area.
I also like the fact that the mid-bath splits the camper into two zones. Youโve got the dinette area up front and the bed area in the back, which gives the trailer a little more privacy and a more defined bedroom feel.
The bed area is clever too. Thereโs overhead storage running side to side, reading lights, outlets, windows on both ends, and flexibility in how you orient the mattress depending on how you want to sleep and whether you want a better TV angle.
The kitchen is another reason Iโd choose this one. Itโs still small, obviously, but it feels more usable. You get a good-size sink, a two-burner cooktop, a microwave, overhead storage, and decent base cabinet space. There are no drawers, which is annoying, but at least the storage is there to organize with bins.
Another thing worth noting is the window-unit air conditioner. Some buyers may see that as cheap, but honestly, there are real advantages. It helps reduce weight, keeps the trailer cost down, and is much cheaper to replace than a rooftop AC if it ever fails. Thatโs not glamorous, but it is practical.
โ ๏ธ What You Should Know About the Sienna Before You Buy
This trailer is not perfect either.
The toilet area is tight. Very tight. Even though the bathroom is better overall than the KZโs, that does not mean every part of it is roomy.
There are also some entry-level shortcuts here. No shower surround. No retractable shower door. Open shelving behind the toilet that wonโt hold items well in travel mode unless you add cargo netting or another storage solution. No kitchen drawers. Those are real drawbacks, even if theyโre understandable in a camper at this weight and price point.
Thereโs also a little odd tabletop area near the dinette that feels like Venture was not entirely sure what they wanted to do with that space. It is usable, but itโs not a home run design feature.
Still, the overall layout works better for me.
Who This RV Is Perfect For
- Couples
- First-time RV buyers
- SUV and small truck owners
- Campers who want a dry bath
- Buyers who want more storage in a tiny camper
- People who care about kitchen usability
Who This RV Is NOT Ideal For
- Buyers who want a roomy toilet area
- Campers who want more upscale finishes
- People who want lots of built-in drawer storage
- Anyone expecting a fully refined bathroom in this size class
๐ What Other RVers Are Likely to Like or Complain About
For the KZ Sportsmen 130RD, most people are probably going to like:
- the very low weight
- the easy towing
- the simple layout
- the approachable price
- the fact that it still has a real dinette and a real bathroom
The most likely complaints are:
- the cramped shower
- the smaller fridge
- the stripped-down bathroom
- the more basic overall feel
For the Venture RV Sienna 140VFD, most people are probably going to like:
- the dry bath
- the better overall layout
- the extra storage
- the more usable kitchen
- the bit of privacy created by the mid-bath
The most likely complaints are:
- the tight toilet position
- the lack of drawers
- the entry-level finish choices
- the need for a few small storage upgrades
Thatโs really the tradeoff between these two. The KZ is simpler. The Sienna is more thoughtful.
How These Two Small Campers Compare
If I had to sum it up quickly, hereโs how Iโd look at it.
Choose the KZ Sportsmen 130RD if you want:
- the lighter, simpler camper
- the lower entry price
- the easiest towing experience
- a straightforward layout with fewer moving parts
Choose the Venture RV Sienna 140VFD if you want:
- a better overall bathroom setup
- more storage
- a more useful kitchen
- more separation between living and sleeping space
- a camper that feels more complete despite being tiny
Thatโs why the Sienna would be my pick between the two.
Itโs not dramatically heavier, but it feels more livable.
And in a very small camper, livability matters more than people realize.
Are These Good Campers for SUV Owners and First-Time Buyers?
Yes, but with the usual caution.
These trailers are light enough to get the attention of SUV owners and small truck owners, and thatโs fair. The Sienna is even described in the transcript as something many SUVs, smaller pickups, and even some vehicles with strong towing capability might handle.
But I would still be careful here.
Just because the trailer is under 3,500 pounds does not automatically mean your vehicle should tow it. You still need to check your tow rating, payload, hitch rating, passengers, cargo, and overall comfort level.
That said, this weight class absolutely makes these campers more realistic for a lot more people than a typical full-size travel trailer.
And for first-time RV buyers, that can be a huge advantage.
๐ก My Bottom Line
If you want the simplest, cheapest, easiest little camper of the two, the KZ Sportsmen 130RD has a place.
But if you want the better camper overall, I think the Venture RV Sienna 140VFD is the stronger choice.
The better shower is a big deal.
The extra storage matters.
The kitchen is more usable.
And the layout just feels smarter for how real people actually camp.
It still has entry-level compromises, but it feels like the better balance of light weight, comfort, and practicality.
Thatโs what would make the difference for me.
Frequently Asked Questions

Both can work for beginners, but in different ways. The KZ Sportsmen 130RD is simpler and easier to understand. The Venture RV Sienna 140VFD feels more complete and more livable.

Iโd give the edge to the Venture RV Sienna 140VFD because of the better shower, more storage, and more useful kitchen layout.

Most extended warranties start after the regular warranty ends BUT the prorated amount includes the time under the regular warranty.
Our original warranty was for 12 months and we got another 12 month extended warranty. After a year we traded for a larger trailer and only got 1/2 of the cost of our extended warranty back, even though it wasn’t going to kick in for another few weeks.
Which of these under 3500 lbs come insulated for cold temperatures 5,500 ft above sealevel? I only have a Subaru Outback turbo that can haul up to 3,500 lbs
I have been looking for an ultra lite trailer under 3500lbs that I can tow with my Nissan Frontier. I would prefer one with bunks and no bed. Also I would like a slide out. Double axle would be great also, but that may be asking for too much.
Good information for one looking for a small trailer. With all of my research, for one looking for a light trailer, the LANCE 1475 is a good one deserving of review. it’s more $$$$ than the afore mentioned unit’s, but it’s really nice.
Good to very good quality used 3500 pounds trailer for a 2018 Chevy Equinox diesel to pull well over the Rockies?
Hey Mike, good article. Did you come across Jayco? …2 full years of warranty. Full shower & tub. This is my third Jayco and Iโm happy. Iโm cruising in a Jayco Jay flight SLX Baja Edition, 145RB.

Ps: I keep my weight down so I can pull with my Jeep. If I ever get out of a Jeep and into a truck, Iโll keep this article in mind. Thanks.
This was a great grouping of nice smaller trailers! The size is just what an older couple like my husband and I are drawn to. The biggest surprise was the Puma ultra light. It didn’t really stand out from the exterior, but the interior was surprisingly good looking and very functional. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen one before. The Casita, Oliver and Nest are also stunners IMO, but I bet you will have to put your name on a waiting list to get one. I recently camped next to a young couple and their dogs staying in a Wolf Pup that was probably even smaller than the 16FQ and it had a rear entry. It had the same big picture window on the passenger side though. That seems like a really great detail to carry across their floor plans. Thank you for the ‘eye candy’. Happy Travels from Michigan
