Does a Bunkhouse Count as a Second Bedroom in a Travel Trailer?
Fortunately, the answer is “yes it counts!” If you’re living in an RV full time, you understand that every space counts in a big way! And if you are a parent looking for ways to make the most of your kids’ bunkhouse room or if you use it as a spare room (or perhaps an office!) then you know how important a second bedroom is to your tiny living quarters.
Two bedroom RVs can also offer premium features such as a washer and dryer as well as two bathrooms, which we will discuss later.
Optional second bedroom RVs offer so much versatility. Whether you are an empty nester, need a spare bed for when company comes for a visit or you are a family with kids, a second bedroom in your camper trailer, which is oftentimes called a bunkhouse, may be the perfect option for you.
Let’s face it: Many RVs can measure less than 300 square feet – so a second bedroom can really prove itself to be a valuable asset especially if you are living in it full time or for an extended period of time.
Two bedroom campers are the perfect solution when you need separate sleeping areas. The two distinct spaces offer not only sleeping privacy but an alternate room for when you need a little “me” time.
With that said, two bedroom RVs or bunkhouses are becoming increasingly popular. If there is a particular feature you are looking for such as rear living or rear kitchen, your options may be limited or the availability at the RV dealership may be small.
Are There Camper Trailers with Two Bedrooms and Two Bathrooms?
So if you are already thinking you need a two bedroom camper trailer, this question may have crossed your mind too. Fortunately, the answer to this question is also yes, but they are a bit more tricky to find because of demand.
If you are on the hunt for a 2 Bedroom 2 Bath Travel Trailer, here are some models you might want to consider:
- Coachmen RV Freedom Express Liberty Edition 326 BH DSLE
- Keystone RV Outback Ultra Lite 301 UBH
- Jayco White Hawk 32 BH
- Highland Ridge RV Open Range OT338 BHS
- Crossroads Sunset Trail SS331BH
Advantages of a Travel Trailer with 2 Bedrooms
What are some advantages in particular that make a two bedroom travel trailer the best option? Most of the two bedroom RV floorplans have opposing slide outs and bedrooms on opposite ends of the camper trailer. Not only does this increase your living square footage, but it gives you and the others in your camper trailer some additional privacy. On top of that, many bunkhouse RVs come with extras like a built-in desk, additional storage, a second couch, fold out tables, and enormous floor space in the spare bedroom for the children to play.
A two bedroom travel trailer RV can be welcoming and comfortable for a family with two or more children. The floor plans and details in the RVs make this camper trailer option unmistakably great, and it is neat to see how they incorporate the extra space, privacy, and features into a two bedroom.
Entertainment centers, bars, fireplaces, and even cozy outdoor kitchens can be viewed as big advantages when you have extra guests traveling with you. Some RVs come with a U shaped dinette which offers additional seating and storage underneath usually. Also, some may offer a double entry and access to the second bath from the outdoors. This is particularly great if you have kids and do not want them to go in and out of the main camper area for the bathroom.
If you are one who loves cooking, then looking for a 2 bedroom travel trailer with an outdoor kitchen may be an important advantage. With the extra guests traveling with you, an extra cooking space may be the answer. With an outdoor kitchen, you may get an additional refrigerator, pull out cooktop, cabinets, ice maker, and even a sink!
The last advantage to a two bedroom RV is a front master bedroom with a rear bunkhouse. This is quite sought after in the RV world. Usually, the bunk room has its own entertainment center and storage up under a top bunk on the opposite side. An extra bath near the bunk room area is just icing on the cake!
Many models will easily sleep four adults and four kids. With a queen master bed, converted dinette bed, and bunkhouse, these models can offer a diverse range of amenities and space such as these to meet your specific camping needs.
Disadvantages of a Travel Trailer with 2 Bedrooms
When you first step into a two bedroom travel trailer, the first thing you will notice is the smaller living and kitchen area. This is completely due to the fact the RV manufacturer had to steal some space from there to make the second bedroom. Most RVers would say they do not like the decreased kitchen and living room areas at all, and it is the biggest disadvantage to a two bedroom travel trailer.
Tight spaces mean little to no privacy. If you are the type of person that likes quiet, being cooped up with other people in a small confined space may not be your best option. Of course many believe confined spaces bring people together!
Usually, these floor plans come with a dinette booth which is dual purpose – can be used for eating as well as folding into another bed option. Of course, if you are the person having to sleep on a dinette fold out bed, you will have zero privacy. If you are a young child, however, which in most cases this would be who slept here, it may not be a big deal.
It’s not all bad, though! Travel trailers offer so many affordable options for those wanting more than one bedroom. RVs with slide-outs greatly improve some of the cons. This can be a lifesaver when more than two people are living in a small space on those rainy days!
Are There Travel Trailers with 2 Queen Bedrooms?
If you are in the market for a travel trailer that will sleep additional adults in the spare bedroom, then you are in luck. There are RV manufacturers that make travel trailers with two queen beds, which means no one will feel like they got the short end of the stick!
When you have bigger queen beds in both rooms, you will enjoy the additional storage underneath each bed which is great and a better night’s sleep. These well thought out floor plans can offer the privacy you want and the communal space for when you want to be together.
Last but not least, a two queen bedroom RV is less likely to make your guests feel like they are in a kiddie room, aka bunkhouse. Most adults do not want to sleep on a tiny twin bunk bed especially if they are married.
What are the Best Travel Trailers with 2 Bedrooms and a Washer and Dryer?
When you are full time RVing or traveling the country for an extended time, finding a local laundry mat probably is not your favorite thing to do. There are a few things to know before buying a two bedroom travel trailer with a washer and dryer.
Here’s the ultimate RV washer and dryer pros and cons checklist:
- How much storage space are you giving up for the washer and dryer?
- On a scale of 1 to 10, how important is it for you to have your own washer and dryer?
- Do you have room for a stackable washer and dryer?
- Would you consider a washer and dryer combo?
Several travel trailer RV models are at the top of our list. Do your own research based on your answers to the above checklist questions to find your best fit. Each type of RV washer and dryer, and reasons why you want one, will determine what you need to consider when purchasing your RV.
Once you have decided on the type of RV washer and dryer, you still need to decide if you want vented or non-vented. If you go the vented route, it will require a hole for an exhaust vent. Typically, this is the best option for most RVers.
For the most part, washers and dryers are a luxury feature. Class A models are typically more apt to see washers and dryers, however, you can find travel trailers with washer and dryer hookups in the master bedroom closet. And some travel trailer models will include a washer and dryer. The good news is if you find a two bedroom RV that you absolutely love and it only has a washer/dryer hookups, or possibly no hookups at all, it is fairly easy to install one yourself!
For models with washers and dryers, check out Forest River Wildwood, Highland Ridge RV Open Range, and Coachmen.
Is there a Travel Trailer Floor Plan with 2 Bedrooms and a Loft?
No, but there are destination trailers and 5th Wheel Campers with 2 bedrooms and a loft.
In order to get a loft, you typically have to have almost like a two story travel trailer.
But is this possible? Well, Forest River Salem Grand Villa is actually a destination travel trailer with 2 bedrooms loft or 3 bedrooms if you want to look at it that way. A colossal one, but nevertheless a travel trailer for all intents and purposes. At 42 feet long, 9 feet wide, and over 13 feet tall, however, it may not be the best travel trailer option for most RVers. See the video below to check it out!
Usually you will get this option with a 5th Wheel Camper as they are better suited for a two bedroom with a loft.
How You Can Use the Second Bedroom in a Camper Trailer
When you are looking for a travel trailer it can be hard to narrow down your options. As a result, it is a good idea to take a look at the benefits of different types of trailers before you make a purchase. Most RVs and travel trailers have an open layout and the whole RV is connected.
If anything is separated it is the master bedroom and bathroom, but everything else will be connected. However, two bedroom RVs and travel trailers have been growing in popularity in recent years. Although they have been overlooked in the past, there are a few significant advantages to purchasing one of the best travel trailers with two bedrooms.
Bedroom for Kids
At the end of a long day out hiking or exploring, you will want some time to yourself. However, if you are in a regular trailer it will be difficult to get some peace and quiet while your kids are still looking to play. If you have a travel trailer with two bedrooms you will be able to eliminate that problem.
While you and your spouse watch a movie in the master bedroom, your kids can play amongst themselves in their bedroom. The extra doors and walls between you will mean it will be quieter, and everyone will be much happier.
Additionally, having separate bedrooms means that you and your kids can go to sleep at different times. This is especially valuable when you have younger children. Since they need to go to bed earlier, it can force you to go to bed before you would normally because turning off the lights where the kids are sleeping means turning them off in the entire trailer.
However, if you have two bedrooms then you can put them down for the night and then stay up until you are ready to go to sleep.
Play or Game Room for Kids
Having a second bedroom means that you will have a play or game room for your kids. As much as you love your kids, keeping them entertained every hour of every day can be difficult. However, if you have a room for them to play amongst themselves then you can get some much needed time to yourself. They will be entertained, and you can relax for a little while.
Second Bedroom for Guests
Having a trailer with only one bedroom is ok when you are traveling with your family. Although it might not be ideal for your kids to sleep in the same room as you, it is perfectly normal when you are on vacation. However, if you are traveling with friends or another couple it will be better to have two bedrooms. Everyone will want a little bit of privacy even if you are close friends, and having two bedrooms will give you that privacy.
Even if you only plan on traveling with your spouse, having an extra bedroom can be valuable. You see, you do not need to use that bedroom as a bedroom. It can be used for whatever you want. For example, you can use that bedroom as a remote office.
If you are traveling for an extended period of time, there is a good chance that you will be unable to take all that time off of work. As a result, you will need some privacy to get work done while you are on the road. You can use that extra bedroom as a remote office to get your work done. You will be able to work quicker in privacy. Then you will be able to get back to your vacation as soon as possible.
School Room if You Home School
If your kids are home schooled it is a lot easier to plan vacations. You only need to plan around your work schedule and not their school schedule. However, if you plan on going on a longer vacation, you will need a place to keep up with their schooling.
Having an extra bedroom will give a good place to make sure your kids are still learning while you are on the road. Additionally, having a place dedicated to schooling will help your kids get into the right mindset when they are learning. It can be difficult to transition from the vacation mentality to the school mentality. However, if you have a room that is dedicated to schooling, your kids will be able to switch into a learning mindset much easier.
Depending on you and your kid’s interests, you might want to spend some time on your trip on arts and crafts. Unfortunately, most crafts use materials that can cause a big mess. As a result, you will not want to use them in the main living area of your trailer because you will want to avoid making a mess.
If you have a room that is dedicated to crafts and things of that nature, you will not need to worry about making a mess because that is its purpose. So, if there is a big spill of glitter or glue and it gets everywhere, you can easily contain the mess and clean it up without it spreading to the rest of the trailer.
