What’s the Difference Between a Conversion Van and a Campervan?

The term “Van Conversion” is used often to describe campervans and full-size vans made for a comfortable drive. If you remember the van conversions from the 1980s and 1990s, they had a convertible jackknife bed, second-row captain chairs, and entertainment packages on the high-end models.

Today’s van conversions now have small electronic kitchen features. The real difference between a campervan and a van conversion is that Class B motorhomes have plumbing. You’ll find a sink and bathroom in them so you can have a fully self-contained living experience.

In this discussion, we’re using the term “Van Conversion” in the sense that you can have your base model van converted to a Class B campervan. Many of these van conversion companies will buy the van you want for you, saving you the effort of going to the dealership.

When you discuss the van conversion process with the company, find out if they can get you a better deal on the price of the van instead of buying it yourself.

What is Considered a Conversion Van

A van conversion happens when a full-size van goes to a third party to be outfitted with features not offered by the original manufacturer. The big-name RV manufacturers could fall into this definition, but there’s a reason their Class B motorhomes don’t fall into our definition of van conversion companies.

When a company like Airstream, Coachmen, or Thor Motor Coach orders vans from the auto-makers, they come in special ordered and partially built. The RV manufacturer finishes building the sidewalls, roof, and structure of the vehicle itself. Van conversion companies build around the finished vehicle.

When you’re looking for the company to build your dream van, there are a few main details to consider:

The type of vans they convert
How long it will take the company to finish the project
How much it will cost to build the van
Whether they offer custom floorplans
If they offer financing

Wherever possible, we’ll provide this info for each van conversion company on this list. However, not all companies openly advertise this information, especially when it comes to price and time. In these cases, you’ll have to get in touch with the company directly.

1. What Van Types Do They Build On?

Before you can convert a campervan, you’ll of course, need a van to convert. And especially if you have a certain van in mind, you want to be sure the company you choose will convert it.

The three main vans used as a base for conversions are the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Ford Transit, and the Ram ProMaster. Many companies will specialize in one or two of these in particular. The Mercedes Sprinter is overwhelmingly the most popular option.

Some companies will also convert “classic” vans like the Ford Econoline/E-Series. Others will convert basically any vehicle you bring them. Chevrolet and Nissan are the only auto manufacturers that still make vans in the wide-body Classic American-Style body. Ford’s E-Series only comes in the chassis. You can still find used American-Style vans from Chevy, Dodge, Ford, and GMC.

2. What’s the Wait Time?

Converting a van is a complex process and so it can take a while – it certainly won’t happen overnight. Building the van will take, at a minimum, a month or two. And that’s without all the other stages in the process, like creating the design.

If you have a certain time frame in mind (perhaps an epic road trip planned), you’ll want to make sure the conversion company can meet your timeline. Given the hot market for Class B motorhome conversions (beware of the unrealistic portrayal social media has created about #VanLife), many van conversion companies are currently experiencing big backlogs, making wait times longer.

For most of the companies on this list, only the build time is provided. But whenever the info is available, we’ll include backlogs and other wait times.

3. How Much Does it Cost?

The cost of a campervan conversion varies wildly depending on the company and the design. Be sure that the conversion company you choose fits your desired budget.

No matter the price point you’re after, you can probably find a conversion company to suit you. The cheapest conversions can be as low as $8,000 (this could be a pre-built feature that fits inside the van). On average, a conversion will cost you between $30k and $50k.

Keep in mind that these amounts don’t include the cost of the van. Most van conversion companies advertise their prices based on what they offer. Unless otherwise specified, all prices on this list are without the cost of the van.

A van will usually cost between $30k and $45k so be sure to include that in your budget calculations.

4. Do They Have Custom Floor Plan Options?

Some companies will only offer preset designs for your van conversion. The phrase you’ll usually hear is something like “we’ve found a system that works and we’re sticking to it.”

And it makes sense; with a predesigned floor plan, you’ll likely get a faster, cheaper, and possibly more reliable build. The company has optimized its process and uses a layout that works great!

Of course, not everyone wants a pre-made design. After all, v an life is all about individuality and living life on your own terms. Thankfully, plenty of companies will work with you to create a completely custom design. This will often be more expensive, but if you want to build your dream van, it’s a great option.

5. Do They Offer Financing?

The last thing to look at is if the company offers financing options. Financing is a great way to get yourself in a van sooner, without having to save up a large sum of money.

Most companies, don’t offer financing. Many of these companies are small and have only been around a few years. Well-established companies with proven track records may have financing partnerships with lending organizations. However, it’s fairly uncommon. Speak with your financial expert to learn about your options.
