Updated April 9, 2024

We don’t like the theater seating recliners in our 2021 Thor Challenger, so we have been looking to replace them. We have also been looking around at the best places to buy RV replacement furniture. This all led to this article, RV Furniture Replacement Guide for sofas, couches, recliners, and dinettes.

As your RV or camper trailer ages, it may require some upgrades to keep it in tip-top condition. Or maybe you are buying a used RV and want to upgrade and update the interior. Replacing your RV or camper furniture is a great way to spruce up the look and functionality of your RV.

No matter what your situation is, you probably have a few questions about RV furniture. We will do our best to answer some of these questions, such as where to purchase RV furniture and what the best RV furniture is.

Additionally, we will look at some of the best options for replacement furniture available. This will include products from all categories, including sofas, couches, and recliners. So, you will be able to make informed purchases no matter what type of furniture you are looking to buy.

Your RV should be a home away from home. As a result, it makes sense that many people want to change things after they purchase their RV.

So, changing a few pieces of furniture is not uncommon. While this is perfectly fine, you need to replace it with furniture that fits. So, take your time during this process; pretty soon, you will have the perfect RV set up.

How Difficult is it to Replace RV Furniture?

Travel Trailer furniture replacement

So many new furniture options are available today that it is easier than ever to replace your old camper trailer furniture. For example, you can replace your entire dinette with a new dinette, jackknife sofa, theater seats, or recliners!

In addition to changing out the furniture, you can also replace your RV mattress! You might as well be comfortable day and night! You can even order all of your furniture online and have it delivered right to you!

Have a Plan Before You Replace Your RV Furniture

If you were in a traditional sticks-and-bricks home, you would not remodel it without a solid plan. The same holds true for remodeling your RV.

You shouldn’t start removing and buying furniture for your camper trailer without considering how it will all work together. Remember, your RV is your “home away from home” and in some cases your only home, therefore, a complete RV remodel deserves the same renovation care and attention that you would give to a more permanent residence.

Find Multifunctional Furniture to Maximize Your Space!

When you are looking into RV furniture options, consider that this needs to be able to be converted into something else. Also, consider ways to save space and allow you to buy fewer but more functional pieces when you plan your RV furniture makeover.

Whether it is for the master bedroom, bunkhouse, kitchen, dinette, or anywhere in your RV, convertible furniture is immensely helpful.

For example, a sofa or dinette could be converted into a bed. Similarly, benches with storage beneath them are incredible space savers. So are furniture pieces that pull out or hideaways, such as seats that flip down or tables that fold up.

Can You Replace RV Furniture with Regular Furniture?

Can I Replace RV Furniture with Regular Furniture?

You can actually replace your existing RV furniture with residential furniture in certain circumstances. However, you will want to make sure you can secure the residential furniture so it doesn’t go flying if you slam your brakes!

In addition, residential furniture may lack the multifunctional features that are available with RV furniture. For example, the sofa may not convert into a bed, or dinette bench seating may not have storage underneath.

However, you can replace your original RV furniture with regular household furniture that is not RV-specific. You can use regular household furniture in your RV as long as the measurements are compatible and the pieces are not overly heavy.

Doing so will open you up to a new world of colors and styles, allowing you to customize your RV as you want it. Additionally, it will allow you to make your RV feel more like a home than a vehicle.

Will A Residential Couch Fit Through An RV Door?

If you are replacing a couch in your RV or adding a couch as an alternative to a dinette or other seating arrangement, it is tempting to consider a regular residential couch. However, not all residential couches can pass through an RV door.

RV doors are typically quite a bit narrower than standard residential doors. Moving a couch through a regular residential door can be challenging. Trying this feat on an RV is even more challenging or may be impossible.

If you are considering replacing existing features in your RV with a residential couch, there are some options that may work. There are modular sofa options that can be broken down into smaller sections. These are a great way to add a residential sofa to your RV.

Another option that may make this feat possible is to find sofas with removable legs. Removing this small feature can make a difference when trying to fit through narrow RV doors.

Before you jump into making a residential pass through your RV door, do the work to measure both the door and the sofa. The sofa you love may not work no matter what you remove or how you angle it through the door. If this is the case, you will need to find a different solution.

How to Secure Your New RV Furniture

Properly securing your RV furniture is one of the most important steps in replacing the old stuff. If your furniture is not secured the right way, it could move when you are driving your RV down the road – or even worse, cause substantial damage to yourself or your camper trailer.

Bolting your new RV furniture properly to the floor is vitally important. But it is not the only factor in ensuring everything is nice and secure. Here are some additional things to take into consideration:

  1. Check to see what type of floor and what is on the floor you are drilling into.
  2. Always know the location of your fluid tanks.
  3. Don’t forget to map out the other important mechanical parts under your floors too.

How to Remove Your Old RV Dinette and Replace it with New Table and Chairs

Replacing the dinette is a very popular remodeling project these days. Many people don’t like the old booth dinette setups and prefer a more traditional table and chairs. In fact, many RV manufacturers offer a table and chair option too.

It isn’t that difficult if you want to replace your booth dinette. But before you begin, ensure there aren’t any tanks, pumps, wires, or a water heater under your booth seating.

  1. First, you will want to remove the dinette table. It will have some screws in it which held the RV table in place. Carefully remove these screws with a screwdriver or use an electric drill if you wish.
  2. Once the old RV dinette table is unscrewed, look for the brace attached to the wall. You will need to remove it also.
  3. By removing the wall brace, it is a good idea to now also remove the old RV dinette cushions. This will allow you to easily remove the old cushions as well as the dinette seat slats underneath.
  4. After you have removed the old slats, cushions, and table, it is time to remove the pull-out drawers if you have any. Sometimes RVs have these or foldouts that can be removed without unscrewing anything.
  5. Once you have all the above removed from your old RV dinette, you should be able to see the bottom of the booth area. Now let’s remove the remaining booth’s screws. This could take a little elbow grease since the RV manufacturer will secure this with substantial screws.
  6. Last but not least, unscrew the old dinette seats. Voila! You are ready for a newly upgraded RV dinette or a regular table and chairs set found in a house.

Where Can I Buy RV Furniture?

If you are looking for furniture for your RV, there are plenty of places you can start your search. However, where you look is dependent on what you are looking for. If you are looking for RV furniture, you can purchase it from a variety of websites.

Notably, Amazon sells RV furniture along with its regular furniture. However, there are many RV furniture-specific online stores from which you can order. Etrailer, Camping World, and RecPro are all reputable stores that sell RV furniture online.

You can purchase RV furniture in person, but these stores are less common. As a result, you will need to search for stores in your area to find one that sells RV furniture. There will probably be a place in your area where you can purchase RV furniture, but it will not be the same for everyone.

Does Ikea Sell RV Furniture?

One of the most common furniture shops in the world is Ikea. It is known for its easy-to-assemble furniture and for being accessible to almost everyone. Fortunately, they do sell RV furniture. Additionally, you can easily find the measurements for their regular furniture. So, you can easily find replacements at Ikea if you want to replace your RV furniture with regular furniture.

What Is the Best RV Furniture?

Unfortunately, there is no universal answer for the best RV furniture. That will depend on your personal preferences and the type of RV you own. However, you can do a few things to ensure that you get the best possible RV furniture.

Firstly, you should take your time and make sure you look at several products before making a purchase. This way you will see a variety of furniture, making you aware of all your options.

Additionally, you should try to pick out your furniture in person if possible. While purchasing things online is easier and requires less time, it removes the personal element of a purchase. When you go to a furniture store, you will be able to try out the furniture for yourself. You can lie in a bed, sit on a couch, and lounge in a recliner.

This will give you a better idea of how much you like the furniture than any online review will. So, while it might take longer and be more of a hassle, purchasing in person could result in you being happier in the long term.

Does Renovating An RV Hurt Resale Value?

Many people like to purchase used RVs and renovate them. Sometimes, renovations are just upgrades to features to make the RV more modern, and sometimes, they are intended to make an RV fit a particular need. These renovations can have a wide range of impacts on resale value.

A high-quality, thoughtful renovation that takes an outdated RV and brings it new life with modern RV amenities can give a boost to resale values. When renovating an RV, stick with neutral colors, simple aesthetics, and classic and functional features.

This is the easiest way to get the most from the resale value. If you are not comfortable doing the work it takes to properly renovate an RV, you will get a bump in your resale value if you hire professionals.

Sure, it might cost you a bit upfront, but when it is time to sell, a
professionally done remodel or renovation will be a huge positive to potential buyers.
Adding features to your renovation that are popular with RV buyers today can increase your resale value.

But be careful with trendy features. Adding too many or making your renovations very specific to your personal preferences may actually decrease your resale value. Remember, not all original features of an RV are good to remove.

Classic RVs and travel trailers (think old-school Airstreams) have unique
features that are sought after by enthusiasts of vintage campers. Keeping some of these retro features can also increase your resale value.

In general, renovating an RV will tend to have positive impacts on its resale value. Just make sure you are thoughtful and remember that you may not be the final owner of your rig. Keep things simple, classic, and functional for the greatest resale potential.

So, use this information, and you will be one step closer to having the perfect RV setup.

New RVers might not be aware that RV furniture can be replaced with regular furniture as long as the measurements fit. They might also not know where to look for RV furniture. Fortunately, there are plenty of options available online.

So, take your time, look through your options, and you will find products that perfectly fit you. However, if you can shop in person instead of online, you should take the time to do it. FAQ’s About Replacing RV Furniture

1. What if I Can’t Afford to Replace My RV Furniture?

Does your camper trailer’s furniture look outdated and worn out? Has the sun’s harmful rays beaming through the windows damaged your RV furniture? Or perhaps your sweet Fido has taken too much of a liking to your RV couch and his little claws have left their mark. Whatever the case may be, giving new life to the furniture in your camper trailer can be done on a budget!

A local seamstress or upholstery shop can custom-make cushions in the fabric of your choice. They can even reupholster the entire couch or chair if needed so you don’t have to totally replace it with a new piece of furniture.

There’s also another solution, a DIY option for which we have found several resources on Pinterest. Many of the DIY posts we found are no-sew options, which is great if you don’t have your sewing machine handy!

If buying brand-new furniture is not an option for you, then one of the above suggestions may just do the trick. However, finding the perfect replacement parts and fabric to match your existing RV furniture may be a bit tricky too.

You may be able to visit your local RV dealer and ask them for furniture replacement recommendations. Often times, RV dealers have extra furniture or contacts they can give you as a great solution.

Buyers beware, however. Oftentimes, reupholstering old RV furniture can be more expensive than buying brand-new furniture. This is not to suggest that we should throw away perfecting good furniture that just needs some TLC in the “cosmetics” department. But it is something to consider if you are on a tight budget.

2. Should I Repair or Replace My Old RV Furniture?

Perhaps you just have a small tear or something happened to the furniture in your camper trailer while driving down the road that needs a temporary fix. Fortunately, you can do a few emergency fixes to your old RV furniture that do not require you to spend money replacing it or reupholstering it.

For a quick fix, try using some Velcro pieces which can be cut to size. We always keep some Velcro in our kitchen junk drawer because it can work wonders in a pinch!

Another emergency furniture fix while on the road is a bungee cord. It can securely fix a broken furniture leg or provide any quick, sturdy solution you need.

Final Words About Replacing RV Furniture

Replacing worn, outdated, or impractical furniture features in an RV can be a simple way to bring new life to an older rig. RV-specific replacement furniture is the easiest way to update your RV. However, RV replacement furniture may not work well in all cases.

If you are looking for something different or to meet a specific need, residential furniture may be a great alternative to consider. When replacing RV furniture remember that what you love may not be ideal for everyone. If you intend on selling your renovated RV in the future, keep your upgrades simple and stylish so that you get the
the greatest return for your efforts.

  1. I need to replace a third passenger swivel chair with a seat beat in my RV and I would like something with a shoulder belt. Any recommendations?

  2. Looking to change my sofa bed to a queen sofa bed in my sandpiper fifthwheel by forest river. Where can I purchase it.

  3. We replaced couch with a nice futon sleeper. But what about sear belts? What can we do to add seat belts? Especially without making hole in center to fit belts through? Is there a large lap belt to go across entire sofa and possibly hold 2 people?!

  4. Does Thomas payne make a jacknife couch with arms

  5. Any ideas on replacing a murphy bed with a sofa bed or recliners. Currant couch the back removes and the bed comes down on top. Suggestions needed.

  6. Dinettes don’t seem to be getting much love on RVblogger lately but for those of us who need the desk space & storage to work, dinettes are way better than those flimsy card tables with rickety chairs. Better yet are credenzas, those half desk/dining sets with lots of cabinet drawers. For the solos & couples who work on the road & don’t worry about providing beds for others, credenzas are vastly preferred over redundant sofas or recliners. Hope you do a special on credenzas & other office-friendly furniture for RVers, soon. I did really appreciate your focus on Airstreams with desk spaces. Thanks 4 All U Do!

  7. Need to know size restrictions for the prowler entry door

  8. What are size restrictions as far as getting new furniture through the door?? We are very concerned about this. We have Fleetwood prowler Regal AX 6 extreme.
Please advise as to our size limit for going through the door.

  9. Help. I want to replace my trifold couch with a recliner loveseat. There are many to choose from. But my issue is that my slide-out sets about 5 inches above the RV floor. The old couch has a built in drop down that is 1/4 to 1/2″ above the floor to compensate for this. My space is 71″ wide. The slide out is only about 30″. Do you have any suggestions. Thanks for any help.

  10. I have a camper with a slide that the inside width is 70″ will a 70″ Thomas Payne tri fold sofa fit?

  11. Hi!! In your research have you found replacement couches that fold up against the wall for use in toy haulers?
