When looking for the best used travel trailers under 30 feet, there are many to consider. One of the first things you need to figure out is how many people you plan on bringing with you on your trips.

This should be simple enough to figure out as most people just travel with their families. However, you also need to decide whether you will want to go on trips with your friends in the future. If that is the case, you will need an RV that will accommodate all your travel desires.

Once you have narrowed down your search by determining which features are most important to you, you should pick a few trailer manufacturers and start by looking at their trailers.

The best way to get overwhelmed is to look at travel trailers under 30 feet from every trailer manufacturer. Instead, narrow it down to five or six and start there. If you do not find anything you want, you can always expand your search. However, it should help you greatly in the early stages of your search.

Are There Any Travel Trailers Over 30 Feet?

There are definitely used travel trailers over 30′. There’s a common misconception that most national and state parks will not accept travel trailers longer than 30′. However, times have changed.

The rule in question is a product of decades past when travel trailers were often much smaller than they are today. Nowadays, though you will still find the rule in effect in some parks, most national and state parks are changing their rules to be more accommodating.

Travel trailers over 30′ often sleep up to or more than 10 people, with a ton of space and amenities to support a large number of people.

Are Pop-Up Campers A Good Option For Used Travel Trailer Under 30 Feet?

These 30-foot and under travel trailers may be pint-size, but many have two 5-gallon LP gas cylinders, lots of cozy essentials, plenty of interior storage, and even sleeps up to four to six people.

Also, purchasing pop-up campers as a travel trailer under 30 feet will get you camping for a slightly more economical price point! By far the ones to look for when purchasing one of the smallest RV types under 30 feet are expandable (or hybrid) travel trailers, teardrop campers, and pop-up campers.

THE PROS OF POP-UP CAMPERS

Right now we have so many floorplans to pick from, many running from 14 to 21 feet from bumper to tongue, and all are designed to fit within an average garage and can be towed by an SUV or small truck.

  • easy to tow with an SUV or small truck
  • soft wall and hard wall options
  • multifunctional furniture
  • fit into almost any campsite

THE CONS OF POPUP CAMPERS

  • lacks countertop space in the kitchen
  • hard to keep cool with A/C
  • lack of storage

Some other neat features pop-up campers have when they are expanded into their upright position are: comfortable sleeping, cooking area, sitting area, and some even include showers and toilets.

Basically, we have three main types of pop-up campers in the RV industry: tent trailers, hard-sided pop-ups, and A-frames. Here is a quick rundown of each:

  1. Tent trailers can “pop up” on the sides, creating extra tent space for sleeping but that’s all. No other features with this style.
  2. Hard-sided trailers are the same as tent trailers with the two exceptions they have hard-sided walls and a hardtop. Keep in mind, that this model will be heavier than the first option for towing.
  3. A-frames are a very popular option as oftentimes they are more durable and easier to set up. But one drawback is they have decreased living space inside.

A pop-up camper is by far the “easy peasy” choice in the RV world because its fold-up, lightweight design makes it super easy for most trucks, SUVs, (and even cars!), to tow. Because of this, popup campers provide the perfect RV for first-time users eager to explore without the headache of a larger RV that may feel intimidating for camper newbies.

Most camper trailer units under 30 feet are totally self-contained. All you have to do is park it, hit a switch and you are good to go.

Demand for smaller camper trailers is on the rise for many reasons such as shorter weekend trips as opposed to long distance travel concerns due to the pandemic. Customers want smaller cars for better gas mileage too, and they want RVs that they can tow with those smaller vehicles.

Hybrid camper trailers under 30 feet are expandable. They usually hit the sweet spot of maximizing living and sleeping space while offering easier towing and a smaller storage footprint. Another cool perk of hybrid campers is they have one or two canvas ends that slide out to create additional beds – as well as a tent-like camping experience.

Regardless of which option you choose from above, popup, hybrid, and teardrop campers are a step up from tent camping without going all-in on a larger RV.  Having your own bed, kitchen, and even a possible toilet are obvious perks of jumping into a pop-up camper purchase.

What Length Travel Trailer Is Best For Families?

According to the latest census, the average family size in the U.S. is 3. At that size, just about any travel trailer under 30 feet will do, except teardrops and many of the couples-only designs. Most travel trailers between 25′ and 30′ will sleep between 6 and 8.

Families between 4 and 6 people will find plenty to like in the 20′ to 25′ category. Most of the RVs out there that are shorter than 20′ are capable of taking on between 2 and 4.

The good news is, that a brief walk-through/inspection of a prospective RV will tell you whether or not it’s a couples RV or it is built for something more.

Final Words About Previously Owned Travel Trailers Under 30 Feet

Used Travel trailers under 30 feet are highly versatile and far less unwieldy than their larger cousins. The largest of the bunch will cover most families and even some of the smaller ones are surprisingly generous in terms of space and sleeping counts.

If you have a large family, even up to 8 people, you should have no problem finding a 25 to 30-foot travel trailer that fits your style and needs.
